If social conservatives really thought marriage was a sacred institution ordained by God, they would only care what their church recognized, not the government.

The word "marriage" has a religious origin. Only a religion can "marry" people. I think that we need to just seperate the two items entirely. There will be civil unions for all couples, issued by city, state or federal officials, and if some want to get "married" then a religious ceremony can be performed by an official of the couples choosing.and we don't have to hear any more arguments from either side.

Way to put your religion where it doesn't belong. We're talking about a real, tangible, right under the law, marriage, and the only thing you have to contribute to the conversation is a deliberate lie. "The word "marriage" has a religious origin." For many, many people, AlmightyZealot, religion is not on their radar screen. When two dudes walk into City Hall for a marriage certificate, the last thing they want to see and hear is anything about religion. I don't know how long you've lived here, but this isn't anything new. The gays don't have legal equality under the law, so for you to rant about your religion, while you've never lost any rights at the behest of religion, is contemptible, and deserves wicked scrutiny. Go tell it to the mountain. Legal equality is more powerful and absolute than your brand of absurd religion. Reap what you sow.

["Way to put your religion where it doesn't belong."]
That's not what AlmightyZod was doing. He was saying that the term "marriage" should stay in religious institutions, and ALL couples--heterosexuals included--should be legally recognized in terms of a Civil Union, thereby giving equal rights and recognition to everyone.
Way to fly off the handle there, pal.

This is a piercing thought! Very doable. We can reform it in the Revolution. It all goes back to separation of church and state.

O.K. Then you should not have any essential objection to separation of church and state. Because this is the core issue at hand, and it is a game changer when it comes down to equal treatment of hetero/homo unions, by any name one chooses to apply to them. As a rose is a rose,...,so a union is a union, by any other moniker, as long as the accompanying rights and liabilities are the same between the two.

I don't have any objection, whatsoever, to the separation of church and state, and contrary to what you're talking about, "...the core issue at hand...," is not the core issue. Nowhere in this video does the OP discuss the separation of church and state. This is something you have injected. The OP is making a mockery of the ridiculous sound bites made by leaders of religious organizations who are against gay marriage. In doing this, the OP attempts to show that there isn't any connection between religion and gay marriage.
In light of this, what are you talking about, and how does it relate to the contents of the video?

OMG(osh)! My response was to your issue with a commenter. But now you are taking issue with a comedian. That is too nebulous and convoluted of an area to hotly debate, or even cooly debate. But, I am acquainted with dudes who would like to walk down the aisle and be blessed by their religion, contrary to your assertion. Not all men wishing to marry one another eschew the issue of religion in the process. The video touches on NUMEROUS aspects of gay marriage, each with it's own corollaries. But my mission in life is not to dissuade you from the position you seem determined to maintain.

I see this said quite frequently. Unfortunately, it's not true. Take a look at chinese marriage, it was based after Confucian thought. Look at Roman Marriages http://www2.hu-berlin.de/sexology/ATLAS_EN/html/history_of_marriage_in_western.h... Marriage was more about the business of two families than love or religious duty. We have Civil marriage already, simply extend that right towards LGBT.

The only... ONLY reason I ever hear from anyone on why they "disapprove" of gays getting married is religion. And your religion does not rule everyone. Case closed! Why is this even a thing?
