    • I also was reminded A LOT of Chinatown in the plot. I had heard that this was very "adult" for a kids movie and didn't understand why after watching it. I didn't notice that many references (maybe to the spaghetti westerns but what would you expect?) and I think that "the bad guy was scary" is one of the worst arguments I've ever seen against a movie.

    • If Hunter S. thompson is an influence on the character then I'm sure it's going to be funny. I mean the reference is pretty blatant with the hawaiian shirt, running for sheriff, and Johnny Depp voice acting. A great nod for a great man. Now all that's left is making the Rum Diaries.

    • Jesus Christ...lighten up Ellen! Not every movie needs to have a political commentary or intense emotional drama to be good.

    • I agree with Brett on this one. Johnny Depp did outstanding voice acting on this one. His character carried the show and there were just enough laughs to make this one worth seeing.

Yes...many of the characters were gross. Did it ruin the movie? No. Take the kids. They will laugh and some parents will enjoy the film more than their kids. How 'bout that? ;)

    • Ellen is spot-on. Rango is so proud of its own in-references -- half of which aren't even funny -- that it misses a very convoluted plot and loooooong scenes and over-sophisticated dialogue that are excruciatingly boring. Even if you want to have meta-fun and see great animation, leave the kids AT HOME. It's way too scary, the language is over the top ("Go to hell"?), and they'll be bored silly. It's either too silly to be a grown-up movie or too sophisticated to be a kids movie, so it fails at both, a typically delightful Depp notwithstanding.
