Do you heart nerds?

If you're like me and have a soft spot for braces (as in suspenders, not the oral kind) and thick rimmed glasses, then point y our browser to this website, NerdBoyfriend.com. It's a photo gallery of dorky (yet famous) guys sporting the carefully cultivated nerd styles. And if you're a guy who wants to grab the attention of girls by embracing your inner dork, there's style suggestions of how to get their looks. Brilliant!

    • the whole reason we are able to have this discussion on the internet is because of nerds so I think it's safe to say everyone should love nerds... no homo.

You can dress like a monk, but it's not going to bring you closer to God. This is why hipsterism strikes so many people as completely superficial. It's a stylistic shell without any substance whatsoever. People don't like it when purity is co-opted.

    • I might also point out that the word they're looking for is "geek." Nerd implies a superior intellect and poor social skills.

      geek
        Slang.
      –noun
      1. a peculiar or otherwise dislikable person, esp. one who is perceived to be overly intellectual.

I've always considered myself a nerd, not a geek. "Geek" has that negative connotation...

Anyway, I agree with you on that lack of differentiation between "hipster" and "nerd." I dunno, maybe I just don't want to see my fellow nerds being pushed aside by commercialism. I'm just afraid guys will use the "nerd" look just to get booty and not actually BE a nerd.

I'm afraid I have to disagree with the dictionary definition on this one. Consider the origins of the word geek. It used to be applied to people in circus acts who would bite the heads off chickens and apparently comes from 'geck' which means fool.

Nerd used to be much less ambiguous. Consider the film Revenge of the Nerds. Apart from Booger, they were pretty much all savants.

I just don't agree with your definition on "nerd" as having "poor social skills." Looking at the etymology of the word "geek," wouldn't one think that biting off the heads of chickens be a little more toward the "wtf" side of the social skills spectrum than the nerd from Revenge of the Nerds? At least that one guy got booty in that moon bounce.

But I say it can't be cultivated. It's spontaneous and unself-conscious, and in no way trendy or fashionable.

Nerdiness may be a state of mind, but if so it's transcendent, not contrived.

    • It's pretty easy to start dressing like a nerd. Just shop for neutral basics and accidentally pick out the wrong sizes over and over again at the thrift store. In only a few weeks you too can have the conversation me and my beau had.

him: "Your style has changed you look like a nerd now." me: "I hadn't noticed..."
      him: "Yeah I don't mind..."

    • yeah , i "heart nerds " , and i f-ng hate posers who'd think "nerdyboyfriend.com" is anything else but a shopping portal . if you can , and are inclined to purchase the $1200 quilted bomber jacket which is linked up under the photo of the Jam when the real jacket in the photo is an MA 1 ( $50 or less anywhere - less in thrift shops ) , and you think it'd be cool to wear it to a club ( or wear it at all ), you are incapable of being a "nerd" or anything authentic for that matter - you need to shop at the Gap - stay there and rot while you're at it .

    • It's really time we start distinguishing between hipsters and nerds. The man in the photo is no nerd. There's no such thing as a "carefully-cultivated nerd style." The moment it becomes self-conscious, it ceases to be genuine nerdiness.

    • I like both kinds of braces. Nerdy boys are my favourite. I especially like the way they dance.

That picture of young Bob Dylan is lovely!
