Reading to a child at bedtime less effective than conversation

A US study has shown that reading to a child before bedtime is up to six times less effective in developing their language and communication skills than having a conversation with them. The ritual of the bedtime story is seen as an important bonding tool between parent and child, and also as a way of lulling a child to sleep.

Personally, if I was a kid and my parent was trying to engage me in a two way conversation just before bed time, I'd be like: 'Hey! I'm trying to sleep here! Just provide the background noise and then be gone!' which would probably count as a conversation, now that I think about it.
