Tea poisoner was looking for love

'I only poisoned you because I loved you' was the plea of 67 year old William Dowling, from Lancashire, who spiked his ex-wife's cups of tea with mercury, so that he could look after her when she fell ill.

The pensioner's defence lawyers said "He only sought to cause his wife mild upset so he could care for her and resurrect the relationship."

Surely there are easier ways of getting back into someone's good books?
