Ana Trenwith is an artist whose body of work is truly a living canvas.

The 21-year-old Cantabrian is an entrant in the New Zealand Body Art Awards to be held at Auckland's Bruce Mason Centre on Saturday. Working with the competition's Fantasia Asia theme, Trenwith decided to incorporate the 50th anniversary of Barbie into her entry in the hand painted category.

"I'm making a geisha Barbie and also a life-sized Barbie box. The original geisha Barbie was called Maiko and had a kimono, but I am going to paint an ornamental brocade dress on my model," Trenwith says.

She will have about six hours to turn her friend, Alicia Beddis, into Barbie for a day.

Beddis has never modelled before, but will have to grin and bare it on Saturday when Trenwith will be dabbing her with high-sheen paint.

"I'm sure she'll be fine. Getting naked is the big thing. My sister was my model last year and she's pretty conservative, but by the time she was painted up she was wandering around like it was nothing. When you've got paint on you feel like you're wearing clothes.

Born without three fingers and with a "backwards" leg because of a rare condition, Trenwith says she hasn't let this affect her career choices she works as a hairstylist, a makeup artist at Minifies and also designs and makes clothing. "If anything, it has made me more determined and motivated."

In their fourth year, the Body Art Awards include nine categories including Hand Painted, Special Effects, Mask, Tribal and World of Fluorescent as well as new category, Maori Myths and Fantasies.

The competition aims to celebrate New Zealanders' reputation as leaders in body art, makeup and special effects for local and international film and television networks and to encourage the success of special effects makeup artists.

Judges include five-times Oscar winner, Weta Workshop's
