Surely it's because in religious teachings and generally in the traces of the once conservative society of our parents' generation, it is regarded as virtuous to preserve one's virginity until marriage. It represents purity and innocence and I believe this metaphysical representation is manipulated by pornography producers to produce fetishist material.

Defloration is seen as sinful and immoral before marriage; some cultures even enforce a life-long abstinence. I believe there is a social pressure in the ghost of traditionalist society to conform to a chastity policy, as illustrated by purity balls. Otherwise, women can be seen as selling themselves and may then be equated to prostitutes, such that they are devalued and reduced to the lowest levels of the social hierarchy.

Of course, society is now much more liberal (and arguably more loosely-moralled) in Western civilisation and the myth of preserving chastity is no longer the cultural obsession it once was.

I am not buying the obsession thing at all. I started dating girls when I was 15 and didn't get married until I was 29. I had a pretty active social life and a lot of friends. I don't remember EVER hearing one of my friends (or any OTHER guy for that matter) tell me that he wanted to date, sleep with or marry a virgin as opposed to a woman with some amount of sexual experience. I am sure there ARE a few men like that...but a cultural OBSESSION? I don't think so.

if we didnt make such a big deal about abstinence then it wouldnt be a problem our society focuses on sex have you ever watched tv for 5minutes and not find anything sexual?

Losing it was incredibly unspectacular, yet a pivotal moment in my life.

We obsess over it because, well, it's a big step. Your first car is a big deal, your first apartment is a big deal. Your first plane ride. Your first time leaving your home country. Your first time reaching the top of a mountain. Is it bad to talk about these wonderful experiences because they're wonderful?

Why are men the devil here? Men and women both spend time as virgins--and it's always nice to have the opportunity to relive it with someone and show them the same love and warmness you felt that first time.

It's another way to segregate sex as something outside our normal lives, instead of acknowledging that eating, shitting, fucking, sleeping, loving, killing, dying, and so on are all valid parts that make up the whole of Life. Saying that some parts of life are clean and some are dirty just leads to neuroses.

BTW I mean killing like how we get our meat, not murder.

It is about possession and treating others as object. Without counting that some man really have a false ego towards women. In reality these people are not concerned that women also have healthy needs. Just like man they also need be touch and have sex.

the virginity fetish just shows that some men have very low self esteem.

its a stigma created by men who fear they wont measure up to the last guy. those types of people dont care about purity, they care about "conquering" untouched territory before their colleagues can.

As long as women keep "selling" it. . men will keep buying
