'Guilt diamonds' sold at auction

It seemed to be a system that worked: every time Robert Charlton strayed from his wife, he would buy her (increasingly large and expensive) pieces of diamond jewelery. This mutually satisfactory arrangement went on until his death at 63, so after 25 years of marriage she had acquired 43 pieces for her collection.

The whole thing has just been auctioned for £286,000, so roughly £6,000 per fling. My my, that is a lot of money for a one night stand.
