Riz Khan-Reducing maternal mortality- Part 1

Vierotchka
More than half a million women die from pregnancy and child birth related complications each year.

Nearly all the fatalities happen in developing countries, and experts say the vast majority of deaths are preventable.

Many of these women lack access to health services or simply can not afford it.

The World Health Organisation says that about a third of women in developing countries do not receive care from skilled health professionals, which makes them susceptible to severe bleeding and infections - the main causes of death.

    • I was very encourage the other day to see statistics on the WHO website regarding antiviral drugs being administered to HIV positive pregnant women to prevent mother to child transmission of the virus. This was very encouraging to see that from 2002 to 2007 the number of mothers receiving therapy had doubled, but there is still much more that needs to be done. Only covering 31% of the people who need antiviral therapy is terrible when there are 7 Million who need them. These were the stats for Africa.

I was surprised to see that in Latin America 61% of people who need antiviral drugs are getting them. Why? Because basically those countries have told the Drug Companies "We aren't going to honor your patents. We are going to produce the drugs ourselves and provide them at low cost to our citizens." They took the profit out of the equation and were able to increase the number of people getting drugs.

Something similar needs to be done to reach all these women who need care to prevent birth deaths and infant mortality. A similar strategy might be very useful.
