The American Idol star's performance at Sunday's American Music Awards has led to more than 1,500 complaints by viewers.

In what was promised to be a sexy performance, the openly gay singer simulated sex on stage with a back-up dancer and kissed a straight male musician on the mouth.

There was a giant mirrored prop so the audience could see looks of shock in the crowd.

Apparently producers weren’t informed about the guy-on-guy kiss in advance, and after the show

The show's producers haven't commented , but ABC said the amount of complaints was moderate. This is true if compared to Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction" at the 2004 Superbowl which had over 500,000 complaints.

As this was his first televised appearance since the American Idol finale he must have been going for shock value, but I wonder if he thought there'd be this number of complaints?
