Irony alert

The Republican National Convention is scheduled to open in Tampa, Fla., on Monday, assuming Hurricane Isaac (nicknamed “Ike”) decides not to crash the party that’s destroying his legacy.

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus announced that the theme of the convention’s second night will be ”We Built It.” It’s a not-so-subtle dig at President Obama, designed to continue to misrepresent (read: “lie about”) the president’s “you didn’t build it” line that Mittens and Eddie Munster have been deliberately trying to exploit by taking it completely out of context.

What the president actually said (not that it matters a whit to Fox News, Rush, Rove or the Koch brothers) was, “Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.”

Small problem, Reince. The president’s point is actually underscored by the very arena where you’re holding your little “We Built It” fiesta. The Tampa Bay Times Forum Arena was financed primarily by (gasp!) government money. Almost two-thirds of the construction was paid for by public funds.

I don’t wish harm to anyone. I’m a peaceful, kind, loving soul. But if the hurricane does hit the convention arena next week, do you suppose they’ll rebuild it by passing the hat and collecting only private dollars? Or maybe Mittens and the little Munster will roll up their crisp white sleeves, grab a hammer and some nails, and do it themselves.

Mama would pay to see that.

Have a great weekend!
