America's billionaire boys' club and political influence
Plutocracy: You may hear this word a lot on the show tonight. What is it, and what does it mean? What’s on tap for tonight?
I know what you’re thinking, but no, a plutocracy is not the governmental system on Pluto. Just as a monarchy is is a society “ruled by one” and democracy is “ruled by many” a plutocracy is a society “ruled by the wealthy.” And it is what America is starting to become. If there is one thing the Occupy movement has done exceptionally well, it is highlight the division in this country between the super rich and the rest. But why is this growing inequality such a bad thing? Robert Reich (and many others) has explained at length why the increasing inequality is actually slowing the nation’s economic recovery. The fact is the economy is recovering and growing, but the majority of the profits are still going to the super rich! Robert Reich will be joining us inside The War Room tonight to discuss.
Also, following the US Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision, corporations were suddenly given a political voice, and Super PAC’s started to form. These “special” political action committees are allowed to take unlimited donations from corporations and individuals. Enter our flock of billionaires. You’ve heard of what the Koch brothers and Sheldon Adelson have done, but there are more billionaires playing a huge role in this year’s presidential election. Authors of It’s Even Worse Than It Looks, Norm Ornstein and Thomas Mann, will join us tonight as we explore this billionaire boys’ club, and their (not so hidden) motivation.
Can the presidency be bought? Well, we know a candidate can be. Join us tonight as we lift the curtain on the billionaires pulling the strings for the Romney puppet show. Tune into ‘The War Room’ at 9EST/6PST only on Current TV, and join our communities on Facebook and Twitter.
