What Marissa Mayer as Yahoo! CEO means for women, and more ‘women’s issues’

Tara McGuinness says it’s time to bring ‘women’s issues’ off the political sidelines.

McGuinness, the senior VP at the Center for American Progress Action Fund, joined us in “The War Room” to share her opinions on important issues facing women today — like sick leave and maternity leave — and to talk about the place these issues have in politics.

“They’re considered women’s issues. They’re not at the center of the debate,” she says. But, she points out, now that the majority of American families are led by working women, “we’re getting to a cultural tipping point where our policies need to keep up with where our people are.”

McGuinness also has positive words related to the appointment this week of former Google executive Marissa Mayer as the new Yahoo! CEO, an event that spurred conversation around businesswomen and maternity leave, as Mayer is due to have her first child in October.

“Appointing a pregnant CEO to a Fortune 500 company is one of the most important cultural things that has happened in the space of women in the workforce in a long time,” says McGuinness.
