Think about the last time you upgraded iTunes on your computer, downloaded that new app or signed up for something online. Do you recall what you agreed to in the terms and conditions? Didn’t think so. Those annoying, seemingly infinite, confusing stipulations that you have to agree to in order to download or sign up for anything? Forget it. It makes sense that nobody takes the time to read them because, according to filmmaker Cullen Hoback, if we actually read every single online term and condition, it would take us 180 hours to get through all of them.

The film “Terms and Condition May Apply” takes a deep dive in exploring what you’re actually approving of when you click “I agree.” From the obvious agreements to the tiny print, the film exposes the scary truth about what information you allow companies to access. Before you’ve finished seeing the film, you’ll likely be on your computer hastily changing privacy settings and unsubscribing from all those e-mails you receive. The terrifying facts that Hoback reveals are enough to make you want to delete your Facebook account and (maybe) even stay off your computer altogether, vowing to never click “Accept” again. Take a look at the captivating trailer here.

This film couldn’t have come at a better time. With new information about the National Security Agency’s PRISM program, many people question their privacy online. What are the consequences of giving up your personal information? Hoback joins Michael Shure in “The War Room” tonight at 6E/3P to discuss what you should know about the terms and conditions when you click “I agree.” Check out where “Terms and Conditions May Apply” is playing near you!

When you think of poverty, chances are suburban communities with white picket fences and well-kept lawns don’t come to mind. The truth is that suburbia is home to the fastest-growing poor population in the country. One of the main problems is the lack of attention, most likely due to the preconceived notion that the suburbs symbolize the American Dream. Pew Research recently came out with a study that said nearly a quarter of Americans struggled to put food on the table last year. This hits home across the country, but especially in suburban communities. In fact, from 2000 to 2011, suburban poverty rose by 64 percent, whereas urban poverty rose by 29 percent. So why is it that poverty is on the rise in suburbia? This infographic from Brookings best maps out the reasons:

Click here to expand the infographic.

Elizabeth Kneebone, co-author of “Confronting Suburban Poverty in America,” will be joining us tonight in “The War Room” to discuss the rise and causes of suburban poverty and the implications it could have for the rest of the country if it continues to be hidden.

Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a nonprofit organization that brings mothers together to fight for common-sense gun laws, recently announced its new campaign to support corporations that have “gun sense” and put pressure on those that don’t. Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action, describes gun sense as “our common-sense approach to supporting policies and people who understand that while it’s important to respect the Second Amendment, it’s also important to take action to curb the growing epidemic of gun violence in America.”

This new campaign is urging moms in America to support businesses that don’t allow guns in their establishments, don’t sell assault weapons and don’t partner with gun lobby organizations. In addition to supporting businesses that have gun sense, the campaign puts pressure on businesses such as Starbucks, Wal-Mart, Cabela’s and National Car Rental to change their ways. Moms Demand Action enables anyone to reach out via e-mail to specific corporations to either thank them for having gun sense or ask them to start changing their policies and practices.

Here are some of companies that Moms Demand Action praises and supports:

Moms Demand Action is known for effective advertisements and catching the attention of the public. This recent ad from Moms Demand Action compares a dodgeball and an assault weapon:

Next week, Moms Demand Action members will meet with the members of Congress who voted against background checks. They also plan to protest Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, during his visit to New York and will continue to pressure state legislators to repeal laws allowing guns in schools. Watts joins us in “The War Room” tonight at 6E/3P to discuss Moms Demand Action’s campaign to hold corporations accountable on gun control and will update us on the organization’s fight for gun sense in America.

We have grown accustomed to hearing about violence between Palestine and Israel, but we rarely hear about the practice of nonviolence. Is nonviolence just not used in the Middle East? In fact, Palestine is practicing nonviolence in its relations with Israel — but no one is paying attention to it. As filmmaker Julia Bacha puts it, “Violent resistance and nonviolent resistance share one very important thing in common: they are both a form of theater seeking an audience to their cause.” Violence in the Middle East has a large audience. Nonviolence does not. Why is our focus on violence in conflicts and not on the nonviolent leaders paving the way to better results?

“My Neighbourhood,” a film co-directed by Bacha and Rebekah Wingert-Jabi, shares the story of a Palestinian community using nonviolence to protest against evictions. The documentary follows the life of a Palestinian teen, Mohammad El Kurd. He and his family were forced to share their home with Israeli settlers and ultimately had to give up their home to Israelis carrying out court-sanctioned evictions. Mohammad, his family and others in Sheikh Jarrah, their East Jerusalem neighborhood, started a peaceful protest. And the unexpected happened — some Israelis in the region became their allies. Tonight, we will talk with Bacha about why she found it important to shine a light on the unheard voices of the Middle East.

Imagine signing up to defend your country, only to soon find yourself being sexually violated — and your pleas for justice ignored by your own countrymen. Unfortunately, this happens to women — and men — in the military at a growing rate. On Tuesday the Pentagon released a survey estimating that 26,000 people in the armed forces were sexually assaulted last year, up from 19,000 in 2010.

Rape culture in the military is pervasive — on May 7, Lt. Col. Jeff Krusinski was removed from his position as head of the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office pending a sexual battery investigation, NBC News reports.

President Obama will hold a meeting at the White House on Thursday with Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and the Joint Chiefs of Staff to discuss sexual assault, after calling on the military last week to do more to prevent and investigate reports of sexual assault. “I expect consequences,” Obama said. “I don’t want just more speeches or awareness programs or training.”

Thankfully, some of our elected officials are also taking a stand — The Hill reports that Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., and a dozen other lawmakers introduced the Military Justice Improvement Act on Thursday morning, a bill that would remove sexual assault cases from the military’s chain of command.

“This is the only way to provide the unbiased justice that our victims need,” Gillibrand said.

On Thursday, Army Chief of Staff Gen. Raymond Odierno said that sexual assault and harassment violate the trust between soldiers and leaders and are contrary to Army values, the Associated Press reports.

Here’s a quick breakdown of this important legislation that could help bring justice for those who risk their lives to protect our freedoms:

1. More ways to investigate and prosecute: The Military Justice Improvement Act would allow each military service’s chief of staff to establish courts, empanel juries and pick judges to hear sexual assault cases, NBC News reports.

According to Reuters, the bill would also make it so that commanders cannot set aside the conviction of anyone who has been found guilty of sexual assault or downgrade a conviction to a lesser offense.

2. Pushed by a bipartisan group of lawmakers: ”What does it say about us as a people, as a nation, as the foremost military in the world, when some of our servicemembers, both men and women, have more to fear from their fellow soldiers than from the enemy?” asked Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine.

3. This isn’t the only sexual assault–related bill to watch: S. 871: Combating Military Sexual Assault Act of 2013 was introduced on May 7. If passed, it would amend Title 10 of the U.S. Code to enhance assistance for victims of sexual assault committed by members of the armed forces and for other purposes.

The Congressional Research Service, a nonpartisan division of the Library of Congress, explains that, among its other benefits, S.871 would amend the National Defense Authorization Act to require the National Guard of each state and territory to ensure that a sexual assault response coordinator is available at all times to its members.

The tragic shooting deaths of 27 people in Newtown, Conn., in 2012 and the mass shooting inside a Century movie theater in Aurora, Colo., helped awaken the nation to pervasive gun control issues. News organizations and watchdogs on both sides of the debate reported on every facet of the events and subsequent fallout.

Media attention has historically helped to inform the public on pending legislation as well as shaping public opinion. Here are two important gun stories that we need to keep talking about.

Urban gun crime

According to U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data, almost 60 percent of U.S. firearm homicides occur in 62 cities within the country’s 50 largest metropolitan areas, theatlanticcities.com reports.

People in urban areas across the nation have been dying for decades at the hand of gun violence with very little media attention being paid to those stories — stories that frequently involve the deaths of the working poor or people of color.

A Mother’s Day parade in New Orleans this past weekend turned into a chaotic, frightening scene for attendees when a mass shooting injured 19 people, including two children. Reuters reported on Monday that New Orleans police have identified a suspect. Violent crime in New Orleans ranks above the national average in FBI surveys, and a 2010 poll of residents found crime to be their greatest concern.

Don’t miss filmmaker John Richie on “The War Room” on May 15. He’ll discuss his film “Shell Shocked,” which starts at the surface of New Orleans’ teen murder epidemic and delves into the hearts and minds of those whose lives are most deeply impacted. Watch the “Shell Shocked” trailer here.

Although a recent Pew Research Center study revealed violent gun crime has dropped dramatically overall in the past two decades, gun deaths continue to rise in many urban areas. Chicago’s homicide rate increased in 2012. As reported by Think Progress, data from the University of Chicago Crime Lab points to three noteworthy factors: escalating gang conflict, outdated law enforcement practices—and access to guns.

In March, a 6-month-old baby died in a Chicago hospital after being shot five times. More than 270 school-aged children in Chicago have been killed through gun violence since 2007. Gun violence is so prevalent that the state of Illinois is close to making shooting-incident drills mandatory in all public and private schools.

MyFoxChicago.com reports the drill is designed to prepare students to deal with a school shooting and will help familiarize them with the sound of gunfire.

“Kids are able to hear it and know what it might sound like so they can react more quickly if a situation like that were to arise,” spokesman Jeff Puma said. But some parents say the fake gunfire is taking it too far.

“I don’t think it’s necessary,” parent Kelly Wright told MyFoxChicago.com. “I think they can hold a drill without doing that. I think there is going to be a lot of emotional trauma with the kids.”

According to conservative commentator Ann Coulter, people of color are largely responsible for gun violence in the U.S.

In an interview with Fox News in January, Coulter said, “If you compare white populations, we have the same murder rate as Belgium,” Coulter said. “So perhaps it’s not a gun problem, it’s a demographic problem.”

People with a greater grasp of statistics and intersecting factors note that white people — including children — die from gun shots inflicted by other white people every day. Additionally, most mass shootings are committed by white men. Gun violence is informed by multiple factors, including education, socioeconomics and state gun laws.

If we want to prevent more gun violence nationwide, we must go deeper than the background check debate and black-and-white thinking and examine how institutional racism has shaped the way people of color are affected by and participate in gun violence.

Guns on campus

Several states across the nation ban weapons on campus, but Texas may soon come off that list.

A bill to allow concealed handgun license holders to carry their weapons into Texas college buildings and classrooms got a significant boost in the state Senate on Tuesday, the Associated Press reports.

Supporters of the bill say that shootings at college campuses, such as the one at Virginia Tech in 2007, prompted a wave of efforts in Texas and nationwide to allow guns. The Texas Rifle Association calls it a gun rights issue and says people should be allowed to defend themselves. However, there has been overwhelming student opposition across many Texas campuses.

Texas College Democrats released an online petition encouraging students to voice their opinion on this crucial issue. The Huffington Post reports University of Texas President William Powers has opposed concealed handguns on campus, saying the mix of students, guns and campus parties is too volatile.

Garry Jones, president of the Texas College Democrats, will once again join us on “The War Room,” at 6E/3P this evening, to give us an update on efforts to keep guns off Texas campuses.

Allowing guns on campus was just one of 12 gun bills the Texas House approved in May to further soften gun laws. The bills must all clear final, procedural votes before heading to the state Senate. Still, they advanced with only minimal delay, NBCDFW.com reports.

Ever since the U.S. Senate voted against expanding background checks on firearms sales as well as against a proposal to ban some semi-automatic weapons modeled after military assault weapons, organizations such as Slate and the Brady Campaign have been keeping track of exactly how many people are dying each day from guns.

In an op-ed published in Tuesday’s New York Times, actress and activist Angelina Jolie revealed she had a preventive double mastectomy after being told that she had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer.

Breast cancer alone kills some 458,000 people each year, according to the World Health Organization, mainly in low- and middle-income countries. In her piece, Jolie declared her wish for all women around the world to have access to gene testing to help detect the early stages of breast and ovarian cancer.

The BRCA gene mutation, a genetic predisposition, can sharply increase the risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer. The American Cancer Society recommends that women in their 20s and 30s have a clinical breast exam every three years and that women 40 and older have one every year. Jolie encourages women everywhere to “seek out the information and medical experts who can help you through this aspect of your life, and to make your own informed choices.”

Unfortunately, many women around the world cannot afford or don’t have nearby access to preventive services. As Jolie noted, “The cost of testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2, at more than $3,000 in the United States, remains an obstacle for many women.”

Here are three more things you need to know about the BRCA gene mutation, provided by Pink Lotus Breast Center, where Jolie is receiving treatment:

1. Knowledge is power: The BRCA gene is found in the cells of breast tissue, where it helps repair damaged DNA or destroy cells when DNA can’t be repaired. If the BRCA gene itself is damaged, it cannot function properly and allows the damaged DNA cells to duplicate without control, resulting in an almost guaranteed development of a breast cancer at some point during the woman’s life.

2. Early detection is critical: Most women who carry the BRCA gene mutation are unaware that they do, yet this genetic mutation in either the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene increases a woman’s lifetime risk of breast cancer from 12 percent to as high as 85 percent.

3. How to get tested: A blood sample is required to check for BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations, and genetic counseling is recommended before and after the tests.

Medicare patients do have some access to BRCA1 and BRCA2 genetic testing. Here are the guidelines covering these services. FORCE (Facing Our Risk of Cancer) also provides a comprehensive database on finding health care for genetic testing.

Another method for the uninsured to find out if they have the BRCA mutation is to participate in clinical trials. Find a clinical trial near you.

Learn more about BRCA1 and BRCA2 in this fact sheet created by the National Cancer Institute.
