'Fundamental' American right to vote has expanded – until now

“The Voting Rights Act was the most successful civil rights act we’ve had in this country,” says Melanie Roussell, press secretary for the Democratic National Committee. “We’ve expanded the right to vote,” she says, until now. Last year 15 states made it harder to vote and 15 more may follow suit this year. “This is an issue that’s beyond turnout,” Roussell points out. “This is about a fundamental American right that we’ve been expanding over time, and Republican legislators are trying to turn back the clock.” To combat the anti-vote effort, Democrats have introduced www.gottavote.org.
