Government student loans enable middle class families to fund college

The U.S. has slipped to 12th in terms of college graduation rates, which could one day cause workforce shortages and further economic downturn, Conn. Representative Joe Courtney tells Jennifer Granholm. Courtney says the U.S. needs to keep funding affordable student loans. “The Stafford student loan program is the workhorse for middle class families in terms of paying for college,” he says. While the Republicans want to raise interest rates on Stafford loans, Courtney says raising rates would bury people under an extra $5,000 to $10,000.
