And neither can think of a reason for a civilian to have an assault weapon. “With these large-capacity magazines, the ability to not to have to reload means a shooter can get off significantly more shots. If the shooter had to reload, there’s a greater chance for law enforcement to intervene, for people to get out of the situation. So a large-capacity magazine really makes a great amount of difference,” Van Houten says.
