“I know this is going to sound strange: The NRA doesn’t care much about guns,” says John Rosenthal, founder of Stop Handgun Violence. “They use guns to pretend that Democrats are going to confiscate guns and therefor you’ve got to support the right wing of the Republican party.” Rosenthal says both Democrats and Republicans kowtow to the NRA because of the organization’s influence, and that the fear of the NRA keeps hearings about guns and gun violence off the political table.
