Kamala Harris on controversial abortion laws: 'Government needs to get out of this discussion'

California Attorney General Kamala Harris is in the War Room with Jennifer Granholm to discuss some of the important social issues gaining traction in political discussions across the country – including controversial contraception legislation in Virginia.

“Government needs to get out of this discussion and leave it to these women to make this painful and difficult decision that will often be a battle between conflicting priorities,” Harris says.

A former attorney general in Michigan, Granholm talks to Harris about the legal strategies behind some of the battles on issues like gay marriage and equality for minority groups.

“When you’re talking about something as fundamental as equality and civil rights, it should not be the subject of any political process,” Harris says. “I think the best way to get the issues resolved is through the courts.”
