NRA CEO LaPierre’s gun control conspiracy theories ‘are able to scare enough members of Congress’ that it works for them

Alan Berlow of Salon.com says that Wayne LaPierre is promulgating conspiracy theories. LaPierre claimed that if Obama was elected in 2008, all guns would be seized. Now he says this could happen in 2012 if Obama is elected. He also says that the United Nations is behind a similar effort.

“Where does this paranoia come from?” asks Granholm.

“These conspiracies seem crazy to us, but they’re able to scare enough members of Congress, so it works for them,” says Berlow. More interesting, LaPierre “doesn’t really believe the stuff” he’s selling to everyone else. He has been the CEO of the NRA for 20 years — in those 20 years, he’s never, ever made a single contribution to the NRA Political Victory Fund.
