Mark Glaze, director of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, tells Jennifer Granholm that the overwhelming majority of Americans actually support the common-sense solutions advocated by his organization and more than 700 mayors across the United States. Glaze and his cohort hope to implement universal background checks and a federal trafficking statute, among other changes.
However, the powerhouse NRA works to keep things as they are. Glaze says that many NRA members agree with what his organization proposes, but the NRA is protecting their business as much as their interpretation of the Second Amendment. “The percentage of gun-owning households in this country has been in steady decline for a generation,” says Glaze. “It becomes the job of the NRA to prop up that industry and increase gun sales.”
