What’s working: Food bank brings 23.9 million pounds of produce to hungry families
“Food is food when you’re hungry, but it’s hard to beat fresh food,” says Allen White, assistant operations manager at the San Francisco Food Bank. The food bank’s Farm to Family program pioneered the connection between local farms and regional food banks to bring fresh food to low-income people. Food is distributed at the food bank and also in farmer’s market–type stands within communities. “If I would have to buy this, I couldn’t afford it. … This food bank plays a tremendous part in a senior’s life, and it needs to be known,” says senior and cancer patient Glenda Robinzine, a resident of Mosaica Apartments, which offers the farmer’s market–type food distribution. Robinzine says the food provides peace of mind and helps her keep her weight healthy.
