Ray does the set lighting here at “The Young Turks.” I see Ray every day. He and I have chatted, we’ve laughed, he’s asked me my opinion in passing on a few different issues, none of them memorable, all of our contact falling under the umbrella of “small talk.” Ray is often on a ladder, or holding a light meter in front of someone’s face. He is nothing but pleasant.

But the other night, after a week of hosting the show while Cenk was away, I had a beer with Ray (truth be told, Ray had a beer and I had a ginger beer). While we were talking for longer than we ever had, Ray began telling me about what he did when he wasn’t on the ladder or holding the light meter. It turns out that Ray is an auxiliary Coast Guard volunteer. Why? Because he was bored and looking for something else to do on the weekends. So as a way of getting out of the house, Ray sets navigational buoys on a Saturday.

But if there aren’t buoys to be set, Ray will be on his motorcycle as a member of the Patriot Guard Riders. I learned what the Patriot Guard Riders are from Ray last Friday. You know the Westboro Baptist Church, those hateful bastards who stand outside in protest of the funerals of homosexuals, soldiers, celebrities, and even the nine-year-old victim of the 2011 Tucson shooting that nearly killed Rep. Gabrielle Giffords?

Well, Ray and the rest of the Patriot Guard Riders ride their motorcycles in front of those clowns and their “God Hates Fags” signs so that no one can see them or even hear them as the Guard revs their engines. They also honor fallen soldiers, firefighters, police officers and homeless people.

I asked Ray if I could join should I buy the Vespa that I am eying. He didn’t even laugh. Without a beat he said, “Definitely.”

It is of course entirely a volunteer effort. That’s what I learned about Ray Hinton. That’s what happens when you talk to people.
