Former U.S. Navy Petty Officer and Protect Our Defenders advocacy board member Brian Lewis, the first male victim of military sexual assault to testify to the Senate Armed Services Committee, talks with Cenk Uygur about his experience and the fight to have the military held accountable for rape cases within the service. In 2010, 56 percent of reported rape cases involved male victims. Lewis says that after reporting his own assault, “a senior member of my command came to me and said that I was not to report the crime to Naval Criminal Investigative Service.” A few months later, he was diagnosed with an allegedly pre-existing personality disorder and discharged from the Navy. “It blew all the trust I had in the military right out of the water.”
