Rick Santorum’s running strong as the most far-right candidate for the GOP primary — but the convictions don’t run quite as deep as advertised.
“He is the true conservative when it is convenient in a Republican primary,” Cenk says, “but when he was running for Congress in 1990? Ehh, not so much.”
Not only did Santorum say then that he was “not a Reagan Republican,” he claimed to be moderate on labor issues and support alternative energy research. He also prided himself on being able to “dance around the issue” of abortion without taking a strong stance on it.
“Wow,” Cenk says. “I hate abortion — unless it’s going to win me an election, in which case I have mixed feelings, and I like to dance!”
