    • Prior to 9/11, the FBI had discovered the presence of a massive spy ring inside the United States run by the government of Israel. This seems a harsh gratitude from a nation which obtains 10% of its annual budget from the American taxpayer, $3+ billion a year. Over the years, American taxpayers have been required to send Israel more than four times what the US spent to go to the moon.

      What Israel has done in return was to set up government subsidized telecommunications companies which operate here in the United States. One of these companies is Amdocs, which provides billing and directory assistance for 90% of the phone companies in the USA. Amdocs' main computer center for billing is actually in Israel and allows those with access to do what intelligence agencies call "traffic analysis"; a picture of someone's activities based on a pattern of who they are calling and when. Another Israeli telecom company is Comverse Infosys, which subcontracts the installation of the automatic tapping equipment now built into every phone system in America. Comverse maintains its own connections to all this phone tapping equipment, insisting that it is for maintenance purposes only. However, Converse has been named as the most likely source for leaked information regarding telephone calls by law enforcement that derailed several investigations into not only espionage, but drug running as well. Yet another Israeli telecom company is Odigo, which provides the core message passing system for all the "Instant Message" services. Two hours before the attacks on the World Trade Towers, Odigo employees received a warning. Odigo has an office 2 blocks from the former location of the World Trade Towers. "I think there is very compelling evidence that at least some of the terrorists were assisted not just in financing -- although that was part of it -- by a sovereign foreign government... It will become public at some point when it's turned over to the archives, but that's 20 or 30 years from now."

    • The Bush administration last week clearly marked out Iran as a prime target for US aggression. While stopping short of formally declaring “regime change” in Teheran to be official policy, Washington ratcheted up the pressure over IranÂ’s nuclear program, repeating its unsubstantiated claims that the country was secretly building
      nuclear weapons.
      Like Iraq, Iran is being asked to prove the impossible—that it does not have the capacity anywhere in the country to produce a nuclear weapon. US ambassador Brill made Washington’s attitude abundantly clear when he preempted the findings of any future IAEA inspections, declaring: “The US expects the agency’s accumulation of further information will point to only one conclusion: that Iran is aggressively pursuing a nuclear weapons program.” Given Washington’s track record of lying about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, no confidence can be placed in its assertions about Iran’s nuclear capacity.
      The most right-wing sections of the Bush administration are pressing for “regime change” to become official US policy. The influential neo-conservatives or neo-cons associated with the American Heritage Institute have drawn up a strategy premised on an anti-government uprising, which, in the name of “democracy,” would overthrow the existing government and establish a pro-US regime in Tehran.
      Meanwhile, the constant drumbeat of public statements from administration officials warning of Iranian nuclear weapons, support for terrorism and the preposterous insinuation that Teheran would hand over a nuclear weapon to Al Qaeda, all are aimed at creating a climate of fear within the American public
      As with Iraq, the real reasons for the mounting US pressure on Iran lie in WashingtonÂ’s aims to dominate the Middle East and its vast reserves of oil. Not only is Iran a major producer of oil in its own right, but it lies directly adjacent to the oil and gas-rich areas of Central Asia. The shortest and cheapest routes for pipelines to exploit the resources of the Central Asian republics lie across Iran to the Persian Gulf.

    • Sometime in the next several months an announcer will interrupt regularly scheduled programming to introduce the President who, blinking rapidly, will announce a series of air strikes against Iran. That announcement will probably use religious rhetoric that makes a tragic situation even worse.
      Iran, Iraq, a wreck. That's how you conjugate war in the Middle East, and Iran is the future tense.
      What's worse, the government continues to employ heated theological language that plays well to its base but hurts our efforts to reduce terrorism.
      There will be little or no loss of American life as a result of airstrikes against Iran ... right away. That will happen further down the road, when generations of Muslims that might have been our allies turn against us. (Remember: Hundreds of thousands of Iranians gathered in the streets of Teheran in solidarity with Americans after 9/11.)
      As the Administration continues to escalate militarily the danger increases. The Pale Horse and its rider draw closer to Iran - and to us. And the continued use of inflammatory religious rhetoric only compounds the problem.
      Take "Islamofascism." Fascism is a government function, and there is no evidence that any state participated in 9/11. In fact, the only Islamic government known to have sponsored terror attacks against Americans is Libya, yet the U.S. and Britain chose negotiation there. (Britain accepted a longstanding offer from Qadafi after the invasion of Iraq, so they could claim their war brought him to the bargaining table.)
      Why does Bush celebrate diplomacy with Qadafi - the architect of Flight 700's tragedy - while refusing to speak with Iran or Syria as the Iraq Study Group recommended? Iran is ten years away from being a nuclear danger, and has signaled its interest in negotiation since at least 2003.
      Why would we be afraid to talk now, especially when Iran can be helpful in resolving the catastrophe in Iraq? (And the fact is we've brought a pro-Iranian government into power there.) Instead, we're slamming the door on urgently-needed discussions by labeling our adversaries in theological terms.
      What other countries might be described as "Islamofascist," besides Libya, Syria, and Iran? Only nations that are currently allies, nations such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Pakistan. Leaders like Musharraf in Pakistan are endangered and given less latitude to support our anti-terrorism efforts when we inflame their countrymen with religionist rhetoric.
      And if we are to encourage democratic reform in the Arab world, we can't do it by using terms that imply we believe all Muslim nations are inherently fascist or evil.
      Then there's "Divine Strake." Tests of this massive "bunker-busting" bomb remain on schedule in Nevada, despite protests from local residents.
      Why is it called Divine Strake? A "strake" is a tool used to level sand. A reasonable interpretation of this name in the Islamic world would therefore be "a tool for flattening you into the sand ... in God's name." That will play like a declaration of holy war in the Islamic world.
      The U.S. fundamentalist/conservative coalition benefits politically from framing the anti-terror effort as a battle against "Islamofascism." It allows them to claim we're in a new Cold War, with all the political opportunities that creates.
      Maybe that's why Christian conservative Gary Bauer, in my debate with him on Sean Hannity's show, said that "The struggle against Islamofascism is the defining issue of our time."
      Really? Other issues pale in importance? Ten times as many Americans have died from lack of health insurance as from terrorism in the 21st Century. Six times as many Americans have died from improperly tested pharmaceuticals.
      Yes, fighting terrorism is vitally important - but it's not a fight against "Islamofascism." It's a fight against stateless criminals, and a fight to prevent them from taking over countries like Paki

      This is not the incompetence that it seems to be. Imagine a NeoCon cabal agenda that includes the overthrow and domination of Iraq and the further overthrow of Iran and Syria. Little George cannot be as stupid as he seems. Compromise is the art of grownups. The NeoCon cabal is a greedy, corrupt, and bloodthirsty lot of bastards who have directed the U.S. Military (and population) into an ugly game of hegemony in the middle east, the benefits of which accrue to big oil (WallStreet) and the state of Israel. Who wants to nuke Iran? Our history with Iran is ugly and it is we who owe an apology to them.

      For 200 years politicians have been selling themselves as the hero for "the little guy". As that long record proves, almost none were true to their promises. Patricians take care of patricians first.
      The idea of "just plain folk", the "average guy", the "commoner", "mom and pop" references all have some validity and utility. But they also send a subliminal message: that the people don't count because they have no power. The message is: "You have no power! And so you need a hero. Me."
      And it looks as though this message has taken its toll. As an entire nation is being stolen out from under the people to whom it belongs, and as that nation is being used as a weapon against millions of innocent people in OUR NAME, we the people stand empty, and do almost nothing, as though we have no power to stop it.

      Let us review: When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to [action]. Sound familiar?

      We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. There is NO legitimate way for any politician, nor CEO, nor media mogul, nor policeman, nor soldier to take away the power of We-the-People. That's right. They have absolutely no right to any power but that which we grant them. And the moment they shall abuse that power in any way; the moment that they shall turn on us, increase their own coercive threats, take any rights from any one of us - well, that is treason.

      There are two classes of "persons" in the United States of America. There is the elite: We-the-People, who own all the power; and there is the servile class: corporations and governmental entities, whose very existence is at the whim, beckon and call of We-the-People. Claims to superlative power over the people and activities of exploitation by those with too much power is just treason at a greater extreme; and all the more reason the people must perform their duties to protect the democracy against them.

      Okay, I read about half the comments below...

      It's really sad the one small comment the guy made who was obviously pro KKK... that's the kind of people we are having to fight against for our freedoms.... though .. the words fight against are loaded... and we should not view them as enemies, but damaged and misguided brethren... like members of our own family gone astray....

      I always find it funny how everyone talks endlessly about how all of this is wrong and someone should do something... is that the best plan we have? someone should do something? ... i know a great many people are doing many things, but it is many people acting in small groups... how are we all to unite? where should we meet? ...

      Wee need a march across America... literally... drop everything, stop work, stop life, stop school and march to the capital... start at the west coast and gather every person you can and march , stopping at every small town on the way... people would hear about it... things would change... there'd be food waiting for us once they knew we were coming... God always provides for those who work as hard as they can (or something like that, the saying goes)...

      Plus, people talk about a non-violent solution.. and discussion with the blinded right wingers.... how is that ever going to open their eyes?... they've blinded themselves intentionally... i read a study recently that proves that democrats activate the pleasure center of the brain every time they find a way to rationalize a bad piece of information about one of their own and the same thing for republicans and one of their own.....

      What we really need is to stop a two party system... we need unity, now more than ever, and the only way to get it... is to stand together, both literally and metaphorically.... we need to march...

      if the 60% that realize we are being ANALLY FU#@ED banded together and marched... the 40% would hide in their homes in fear...

    • Here we go again, Name-calling and disinformation. What are you talking about? The toothfairy? We can't deny the fact that the vast military buildup, which includes 13 military bases in Iraq, is necessary for the control of oil, natural resources, and as a base for military operations in the middle east. The military buildup in Iraq does not have to do with "Iraqi Freedom" or with fighting terrorism. We (U.S.) are in control of the oil right now, unfortunately for Bush and his cronies, the Iraqi insurgents are blowing up the pipelines. Iraq might not be a vietnam but like vietnam we are killing innocent civilians left and right and are doing this in the name of democracy. If you want to talk about failed liberal foreign policy and the curing of cancer, what are we curing by going into Iraq to kill and plunder? Terrorism is thriving all over the middle east thanks to us. The war on terror was effective in creating more terrorists. Osama is still around. Is this the cure that you are prescribing, is it working? I don't think so.

If you follow military doctrine you will know that battles are not won with one magic weapon, but with a cornicopia of weaponry. Some of the weapons are big like bombs and some are small like radios. Every phone call you make to an elected official is a weapon, every bumper sticker, every protest you attend. everyone you talk to is a potential ally. When you hear right wing radio stuff, remember that they are part of a well organized machine and the things that they shout about the most are the things that scare them the most. Many of the things we are concerned about and they defend against, trancended on Sept 11. Go back through the web and examine that event. What happened that day? How, and Why? Stick together and be sure to know your facts, study the situation so that when you need information you will have it. CSW

    • Why is that everytime we try to have an intelligent conversation about the state of the nation the right wingers try to disrupt it with their little stories of totalitarianism and the fall of communism? The truth is that we are not fighting communism here we are invading countries and killing innocent civilians (100,000 according to the Lancet). This has nothing to do with the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan or Soviet disrespect for a "Liberal" president. It has to do with a concerted effort to steal the natural resources of Iraq, a country that had no intent of attacking the United States, one ruled by a dictator put in power by Reagan and the neo-cons who currently control Bush. It has to do with setting up a imperialist force in the middle east that will keep the region unstable. It is their imperialist plan, with disastrous consequences, that we are forced to deal with. We also do not believe that all Muslims are terrorists and are out to get us, that is a main talking point for the right, which is used to instill fear into everyone. All of our wars post WWII were not against communism but against democraticaly elected leftist governments (look at what happened in Nicaragua and El Salvador). In a real democracy the people decide what type of government they want and how the government should act. This is what we're getting at, our voice, not the voice of the far right which is planting the seeds of hate in this country.

Al Quaida was created to expell Soviet agression..eventually creating the Taliban and the Afghan training ground for terrorists..If the Soviets had respected Jimmy Carter..they would not have invaded..that is a historical fact....Why dont you talk to the victims of Stalin and Mao 100 million + dead and gone... ask them how they feel about the people who are obviously your heros.     • Thank god ("god" used as euphemism) there is a battle there for morality, principle, integrity. We need a battle here too in the UK. The time for lies, corruption and self interest is up. We are human beings and if we are to earn that right to use that noun with some sense of self respect we better start behaving like human beings can instead of selfish, self interested animals. We have the ability to so why shy from it? We need to work together for a world we where can have some intergrity and belief in each other and our leaders, not a world where we are pawns in their game.

    • It seems that there are many, many people who want Bush and Company removed from governing the US. I am on the AARP Message Boards a lot and there are many there who are calling for impeachment.
      Unfortunately, there are many "Bush Ostriches" there who despite all evidence to the contrary think that Georgie W. can walk on water and make all things right by doing whatever he wants, whenever he wants! Poor fools! We all complain to each other; suggest what we would like to happen to free our country from this "Mad Bull in President's clothing". (It's almost like Bush's brain has been addled by power and what he "thinks" is his "mandate")
      I tell people, "A snowflake doesn't make a blizzard. A raindrop doesn't make a flood. But, when there are A LOT of snowflakes and raindrops, it gets people's attention and things can be made to happen by The Many."
      But, WHO and WHEN can we have someone to consolidate the "few" into "the many?

    • This is an excellent video. This video encapsulates the feeling of hopelesness that surrounds people on the left in these times. Like the first speaker, I too have profound fears about the state of this country. What we need to do is to act upon this fear. We also have to avoid the right wing propaganda machine that is constantly feeding us misinformation and lies. We need to amplify what we're feeling through organization. This video is not about "white people," poor people, etc, etc. It is about the government going awry, about the decline of democracy, about the abuse of power by the few and it calls for everyone to stand up against that abuse.

    • Very inspiring stuff! Thanks! This video does a great job of informing/motivating those of us who already see the threat/danger that is confronting democracy in America.

      Let there be no mistake; the stakes are indeed that high! Frankly, I am far more terrified/concerned about what our own government is doing to destabilize our free way of life than I am about anything the Al Qaeda types might do.

      The violent obvious terrorists can only kill people and destroy property...and as horrendous as that is; they do not have the power to turn us into a police state. Only WE can allow that to be done to us by our own government (in the name of "security"). Rest assured that Osama Bin Laden would declare his mission accomplished if the USA became as much as a right wing fundamentalist "religious" police state as is Saudi Arabia.

      Meanwhile, hundreds of billions of dollars in corporate "contracts" are "awarded" on the basis of how "insecure" we are. There is a perverse incentive for things to degenerate. I wonder if the people now getting filthy rich off the terror/fear really want to live in an America that looks more like pinochet's old Chile?

      The challenge of a site like this is to come up with media that can reach people who are fixated on Bush et al as some kind of a godlike heroic figure who can't be wrong about anything. It looks like that might comprise about 35 to 40 per cent of our population. THAT hard core needs to be challenged to face some basic realities/truths.

      The rock solid Bush supporters remind me of the parents of a serial killer who can't/won't accept the fact that their "nice boy" is up to no good. These folks are in MASSSIVE denial, and it'll take some strong medicine to dis-illusion them. It'll happen sooner or later......but will it be through creative intelligent passionate communication; or will it take the inevitable loss of our democracy and the horrors that would ensue to wake them up a wee bit? And would it be too late at that point?

      Anyway, if any of this makes sense to you; then YOU are part of the WE that needs to take responsability for healing this sick situation in a smart/tough/peaceful/Loving manner!

    • The true feeling of this country is that we are living in a country that is flawed and needs to be fixed. Yet this country remains the greatest country in the history of the world.

      The current president does not admit the imperfections of government ("Brownie you're doing an excellent job"). The president prior to him did not embrace the nations natural patriotism. Ronald Reagan, the most popular president in modern history, did both. He ran for president claiming "government is the problem" yet he never stopped believing in the "City on the Hill".

      I believe this video comes close to capturing this, however, it falls short. The enemies of the United States are those abroad who want nothing less than our destruction, and those within our borders and government who do not live up to the ideals and values of the United States. The enemies of our country are not those who are rich, are pro-life, vote Republican and support the war in Iraq (all of which are alluded to in this video).

    • Well-intentioned and reassuring to see all those faces concerned about what's happening to our country. I thought I recognized some famous faces. Far more meaningful as art than a lot of the escapist stuff on TV. Some of the actors were better than others, but the message got across. It inspires to want to make a change. Maybe if it's slick enough it might influence a few folks it wouldn't reach otherwise. The dedication to Ossie is touching and relevant, may his image and accomplishments live on!
