Im currently brainstorming how to make knitted Mega Man arm and leg warmers and undies so I can dress as a knitted Mega Man (girl) for Comic-Con. Too nerdy?

I loathe our culture. I wish I could vote the entire thing down.

Nice way to contribute a useful comment, or even explain why it's worth loathing. Sounds to me like you just hate everything for being what it is.

I loathe our culture because it has a tendency to glorify novelty and fixate on nostalgia. And because my generation (myself included) refuse to grow up, and not in a way that we retain innocence or exuberance, but in a way that we continue to identify our childhoods with the commercialism of its day. It's severely neurotic.

It's not just your generation that refuses to grow up. I still see 60 and 70 year olds driving Corvettes down Route 66, Beatlemaniacs dressing like the Beatles and going to Beatles cover shows, Rocky Horror . . . and so on. It is just a cultural tendency, for every generation.

I see your point, but I think it's gotten progressively worse over the past few decades as marketing (particularly to children) has become much more aggressive and inescapable. The worst part is that many of us don't even realize to what extent we've been conditioned. We'd rather think of our preferences as being unconditioned expressions of our unique personalities.

What you're hating is counter-culture.
Mainstream culture is too "ADD"-addled to have nostalgia. In our hyper-consumerist world, anything old is disgusting and stupid and forgotten. If it's not new, it's nothing.

If a Mega Man knit cap is considered counterculture, I'd had to see what we're countering. But sorry, no, this is culture. Geek/hipster culture is in the mainstream. Even if it was somehow countering the mainstream, I don't see what the point would be as it doesn't stand for anything.

That's ridiculous. There is nothing wrong with thinking about your childhood or referencing it in art, fashion, etc. Recently I've been using some of my old damaged comic books to collage with. It's super nostalgic but in the best way. For fuckssake I never thought I'd see someone who fills with hate at the site of a knit hat, let alone a megaman one. Cheer up!

It's an ugly reality behind that seemingly innocuous knit hat, that's all I'm saying. I'm just growing weary of all the cute ironic nostalgic gimmickry. It just strikes me as foolish. And no, I'm not calling anyone a fool, I indulge in it myself. I collected Phantom Menace toys when I was 19 and I bought a used Xbox 360 so I could download the TMNT arcade. Maybe I just lament the lack of substance in my own life, but I can't help but see my personal woes reflected in the culture at large.
