Before WWII, Hitler reportedly recruited zoologist brothers Heinz and Lutz Heck to bring back the mighty aurochs, which were hunted to extinction in Europe by 1627.
Aurochs are the size of a rhino and also were quite the thing to talk about in Teutonic folklore apparently, well they would be if they're that big!
The picture above is an artist representation of what an auroch looks like or there's a video at the link.

Sooooooooo kewl ! I WANT an Auroch !
[ Farmer and conservationist Derek Gow, who has imported the half-tonne animals, explained that the Nazis wanted to recreate the auroch to evoke the power of the “runes, folklores and legends of the Germanic peoples”, and it was used as a propaganda motif.
He said: “Aurochs were wild bulls. Julius Caesar recorded them as being bulls as big as elephants. ]

Where's the fear? Nazi's are old news, and geneticly bred cows aren't nearly as scary as mutant corn. I guess the kooks who fear modified corn must be Hindi. It's OK to genetically modify animals, but not plants? God religion makes people STUPID!

The documentary maker Jon Ronson did an interesting documentary on Aurochs for Radio 4 only a few weeks ago.
When he saw them, he said he was pretty underwhelmed as they just looked like... cows.

"Selecting genes to reproduce an ancestor."
Such an incredible idea. With near limitless potential. Fascinating.
Really this is how the Nazis had hoped to recreate the Aryan Race.
I did not know they were preparing by ressurecting an extinct breed of european cattle. Quite Clever. - 4 years ago

“The two brothers argued that if the one wild animal that spawned all of these had gone, through a process of back-breeding domestic cattle, you could pull the wild genes out and recreate the ancestor.”
So very cool.
