After five years of development, pushing the project to 98 percent completion and offering gamers 35 hours of gameplay and 10 separate endings, the team behind Chrono Trigger: Crimson Echoes has received a sternly worded cease and desist from Square Enix’s lawyers, effectively killing the fan project.
Crimson Echoes, while technically a new game, was created by lifting images and objects from an original Chrono Trigger ROM file. Unsurprisingly, this upset the team of lawyers at the Final Fantasy creator.
Characterizing CT:CE as a “deliberate and willful” act of copyright violation, the letter (PDF) demands that its creators “immediately remove, take down, delete and destroy all work on the project.”
What what if they refuse to comply? Square Enix’s legal team also casually notes that the damages for this kind of infringement are “up to $150,000 per work.”
I fully understand Square Enix’s desire to protect its properties, but that doesn’t make this any less depressing. The game looked quite good (if obviously derivative) from what little had been shown to the public, and it’s not like Square Enix is offering fans of the series any sort of viable extension of the tale.
---
I'm not usually in the habit of saying this, but:
DEATH TO SQUARE ENIX!!
How could they stop something that's clearly an intensive labor of love? Chrono Trigger is one of my favorite games and it's painful to see something so awesome get stepped on for some stupid copyright issue.
::Sobs::
