In 2005, the then President of Nigeria Olusegun Obasanjo, proposed the idea of a "green wall for the Sahara". The theory was that trees planted across the continent in two belts, 4,300 miles long and 9 miles wide, would stop the spread of the Sahara Desert.

This idea of a two-year trial phase, which would cost around £2 million, was given the go-ahead by the Community of the Sahel-Saharan States in Benin in June last year. The hope is that this initiative will stop soil degradation, reduce poverty, conserve biodiversity and increase land productivity in more than 25 countries.

A Swedish architect Magnus Larsson has suggested a companion scheme to bring this vast gardening programme to life. He wants to use bacteria to solidify the shifting sands of the Sahara Desert, creating structures to support the trees and providing homes for displaced people.
