I don't really like tennis and I don't like playing tennis games. And yet, I own three of them.
The game from Wii Sports that I play the most is the tennis (closely followed by the golf). And even on my PSP, I've got Virtua Tennis 3.
So I found myself in a computer games shop (ugh) picking this up the other day and looking it over. I bought it and I haven't regretted it.
I couldn't care less about how well digitised the players are (although I do like beating Andy Murray) and care even less about the realism of the stadia. But this is a fun game.
One of the things that stands out in the Virtua Tennis series is the minigames. I love them and they're back again here. There are 12 different ones and all of them are fun (with the possible exception of the routine Block Buster).
What I particularly like about this game is that I can pick it up and play it for ten minutes and have a great time, or sit down for a two hour long session and have just as much fun. And, as I keep saying, I don't even like tennis.
The game never feels like it's cheating me. The blurry streak that trails behind the ball makes it easy to see the ball, so I never feel cheated. If I miss the ball, it's my own bloomin' fault.
Now, I've got the Wii version, but I don't have the new Motion Plus add-on which this game supports. Apparently, that will track your movements much more precisely than the normal Wii-mote, but I didn't miss it. The game handles just as well without it.
Wii Sports Tennis is great and all, but this is a proper fully-rounded tennis game. If you want a more in-depth tennis game for your Wii, this is an excellent purchase. But if you've already got Virtua Tennis 3 for your PC or XBox360, this is probably a pointless purchase unless you're a massive fan. There just isn't much difference from VT3 - it's not that it's lacking anything, but it just doesn't feel like they've added much.
I've only played the Wii version, yet I wouldn't be interested in the others. Standing next to your friends and being able to kick them when they win is worth it alone. I'm not the fittest chap in the world and a long session leaves me rather tired. Indeed, it's the first time I've participated in a computer activity thats given me a sore arm without feeling shame...

wow now this is a game i would look forward to playing This a classic example of a game that novices can pick up and enjoy, yet still takes months to master. In part this is due to the fact that the controls are simple, elegant and highly intuitive. I can see that the graphics have been polished to provide more detailed courtside scenery and lifelike players, who often stumble as they desperately try to return the ball which i think is funny New stars have also been added to the roster including a surly-looking Andy Murray and a grunting Ana Ivanovic lol
i think this game deserves an outstanding 8.5 for the long run i hope there will be more to come
