Toddler has same IQ score as Stephen Hawking the physicist

She's 2. She plays with dolls and draws with chalk. And apparently, she's one of the smartest people in Britain.

Karina Oakley of Guildford, Surrey, near London, has an IQ of 160 — the same as physics professor Stephen Hawking and Microsoft founder Bill Gates, London's Daily Mail reports.

"She has a very good memory," her mother, Charlotte Fraser, told the Mail. "She seems to be quite aware of her surroundings, what's going on around her, she's very observant, she talks all the time, asks questions all the time."

Intrigued by her daughter's exceptional language and memory abilities, Fraser had her tested after seeing a TV show about child prodigies.

"During the test it was noted that she gave imaginative responses to questions," When Prof. Joan Freeman, a child-psychology expert, administered the classic Stanford-Binet IQ test to the little girl, she noted imaginative responses, the Mail reports.

"What do you use your eyes for?" brought the answer, "You close them when you go to sleep" and "You put your contact lenses in them."

    • It really sucks being u-ber smart. I have experienced this all through my life. It doesn't help at all. I have a score of 176 with my iq and has that helped me nada!!!! Its great to be brilliant if there is someone that is there to absorb it, if not, you try to hide it, because being that way sucks when all you want to do is to care fore your children. Relationships suck when your that smart - just ask me - and still no one has noticed - da - de- da -de- da

    • This story is misleading, a 2year old with an IQ of 160 simply means they have the mental abilities of a 3-4 year old, NOT Stephen Hawking.

    • I don't think some people realize how young 2 years old really is. I think the Kids Say The Darnedest Things program had kids more like 6-8 years old on it. Two year old are usually not much on pondering They are more into running around like crazy and getting into and breaking everything around them. So Karina is indeed unusual and may be a child prodigy. But It's a wait and see situation.

    • I don't see anything especial about her answers to the questions. Comparing her imaginative process of thinking to the high level of understanding about the universe of Hawkins and other "geniuses". She may very well end up being a good writer, or an artist. Other than that she's just a child that eats her vegetables. Get the header right buddy.

    • "IQ scores are derived by evaluating how well a subject does compared to others of his or her own age. A perfect age match would result in an "average" score of 100, while a 6-year-old who had the same results as an average 9-year-old would score 150, or "genius" level." -from article

So she has the IQ of an average three year old?

Fair and Balanced News, for sure. Call her a prodigy, exploit her with skewed data. Is there even a standard for 'normal' two-year-old intelligence?

    • I don't place much emphasis on IQ. While it may (or may not) indicate mental capacity, I value actual accomplishments. Let's see her do something Gaussian, then I'll be convinced.

    • The test she took was a childrens test, they did not compare her to Hawking Mentally they only said she got the same score, stop freaking out ._. for fuck sake, let the kid wallow in you I.Q leave her the fuck alone and stop belittling her.

Theres other fucking topics you can go post on,if you don't have something nice to say don't say anything ._.

For the dumbasses who didn't read up about the i.Q test that this little girl took:

"Despite the recent revision (Stanford-Binet 5), some controversy remains as to the accuracy and bias of this test;however, many psychologists believe the evidence available shows that the Stanford-Binet test is valid, and it remains a popular assessment of intelligence.

As Brown & French point out, "IQ tests serve one function exceptionally well, they predict academic success or failure ... they are composed of items that are representative of the kinds of problems that traditionally dominate school curricula," (1979: 255) and thus only predict that category of school assimilation.

Further, "children with the same current status on an IQ test item may vary quite widely in terms of their cognitive potential." (ibid.: 258)
The validity of standardized tests such as Stanford-Binet for testing general intelligence has been disputed by a number of commentators.

Stephen Jay Gould, although not an intelligence researcher, points out in his book, The Mismeasure of Man, that Binet originally devised his test for detecting problem areas, rather than as a means of ranking the general intelligence of students. Over time, the purposes of intelligence testing have changed, however, and the Stanford-Binet 5, the 5th revision of Binet's test, now bears little resemblance to his original work.

Achievement tests, rather than intelligence tests, are now typically used to assess performance in particular areas"

    • where can i have my 3 year old tested...i think my daughter was even brighter than that girl at age 2...she was using vocabulary that most 18 yr olds do not even use...I want a toddler IQ test in USA...

Well, if you so wish to line the pockets of someone for absolutely nothing, dig out the phone book and look for psychologists and find one that has a Weiss intelligence test and is willing to test a 3 year old... I would suggest looking for ones with LLC next to their names they will be cheaper than PHDs.
There are other tests, but the Weiss is a good standard... even though in this case it does not matter.

    • This is total crap reporting! Of course she didn't take the same IQ test that is administered to adults! But she's a cute kid......let's see how long it takes the tabloids to report she's broken up Brad and Angelina

    • It is impossible to take a reliable IQ score from a kid under the age of 5 or 6, and then the discrepancy is still some what high. So she has a good memory, she very well might be autistic or have Asperger's Syndrome, it is to early to tell in some cases. There are so many physiological things going on inside those little kids heads that the only thing you can do is let them be kids, and get them to have fun with some colored shapes or learning a few keys on a piano...
Someone mentioned that they should let her have at least a day in school before they announce her as a genius... that does not mean anything either, most kids with above average IQ do very poorly in early schooling, it is boring for them and they get distracted easily... not a good basis for determining geniuses. The kid that wanders around looking lost picking his nose at recess instead of playing with others... generally the genius...

Is she playing classical music on the piano or solving geometry problems yet ?

    • whether she's a genius or not, the girl is exceptional for her age: more eloquent and creative

however it happened, genetics or not, i bet you her mother never used the TV as a babysitter or subjected her to hours of baby Einstein dvds.

    • IQ doesn’t tell you anything. And she is only 2. They should maybe wait until she spends a day in school to declare her a genius. They might only be setting her up for failure.

    • IQ tests test your ability to take tests and little else. Sometimes this skill translates into other areas, sometimes not. This girl has a test taking ability comparable to Stephen Hawking. Stephen Hawking is not famous for taking tests. She also has comparable driving ability.

that is the most redundant inaccurate statement about IQ tests I think I have ever read/heard. Although I will agree that IQ tests don't prove much other than someones ability to take in information, filter it quickly and deliver a positive result. That is why the "smartest" man alive is a bouncer and not the man who brought us new theories on physics, and before that it was a columnist who was married to Jarvik the guy who invented the artificial heart (he happens to be pretty high on the list too)

    • She is very fortunate to have been blessed with such intelligence and such a creative and imaginative mind. I hope that she flourishes and that we hear from time-to-time as she gets older that she is happy and has had the most AMAZING insights.

    • she's a two-year-old. sure, that's pretty amazing, but i don't think that makes her a prodigy, she's probably just developing at a faster rate than most.

    • i am pretty sure any 2 year old could give some pretty imaginative responses to somewhat boring questions. haven't we seen the show "kids say the darndest things?" maybe we just loose some points as we grow older..... some just begin with a few more to waste...

Completely agree. This is a questionable test and the conclusion. Children at that age are very creative and imaginative. Every child is a genius to his/her loving parents and it’s sad if this mother needed a psychological test to get assurance.

"An IQ tells you what your score is on a particular intelligence test, compared to your age-group."

It'd be interesting to know what "age group" they defined her as, since most 2 yr olds can't read.

    • I can hardly beleive it. Wait, I just read the article and the test makes her a "genius" among her peers. Impressive, but it doesn't mean that she is "as smart" as gates or hawkins, but just an early developer. Sort of unfair for boys who she was likely compared against. Girls always develop faster than boys at that young of an age, especially verbally.

Since the IQ equation relies heavily on the age of the participant comparing her to Steven Hawking really is kind of disingenuous.

No doubt, the kid is bright, but it is worth noting that one of the flaws inherent in an IQ score is that it is highly skewed at low ages.

Laserdog is right. My IQ was estimated at 165 when I was 10 years old, but IQ is a statistical measure, and can vary a lot with age. Focus and determination matter more than raw potential, and for what it's worth, I think it's much more uncommon for a person to have a great capacity for love and compassion than brain power, and ultimately far more important.
