Mario: Love Him, Or Hate Him?

He’s rescued princesses, cured infectious diseases, and amassed a fortune in gold coins. We’ve seen him in sports games, brawlers — even a first person shooter (sort of).
And at E3 this year, Nintendo revealed their longtime mascot’s latest outings: a return to his 2-D platformer roots and a second go-round of Super Mario Galaxy.
Unabashed Mario fans have likely already dusted off their Wiis in anticipation. But outside of the Mushroom Kingdom Appreciation Club, things aren’t so rosy. Over at GeekDad, user daren_grey has had his fill of our mustachioed-friend:
I would rather shoot myself in the face than play another Mario game… EVER. Why? Too much of a good thing. I am so completely sick of the high-pitched whine of that ridiculous character in his silly blue pants and red hat. I enjoyed Super Mario Galaxy, but stopped playing it because the character was so loathsome.
Have you had all of the Mario you can take? Does the thought of another adventure with the portly plumber and his silly overalls make you queasy?
Or do you long for the good old days, with its animated shows and themed bedsheets?
Sound off in the comments.
---
I... personally don't care. I've never had a thing for Mario, but enjoy some of the games.
Do you follow his every move or do you want to rip off his stache with fury?

Good but overused.. much like sonic. In my opinion after sonic adventure they have kinda killed sonic, overusing him and in terrible games. Most / nearly all nintendo games every generation are just upgraded versions of their predecessors: Super smash bros, mario kart... and what do u see a slight variation in characters, and umm maps not a lot else: MAKE BIG CHANGES! or else.. dynasty warriors esq gaming will be seen - boring pointless 'upgrades' to the game released every year in which next to nothing is changed apart from an uncanny act to make your characters look gayer and gayer.

Everyone who seems to have a problem with Mario seems to be drawing up the fact that NINTENDO need new characters. Mario is a pioneer. He does so many things and is older than most people I know.
Its not like the Simpsons where they had their time to reign and now someone has come to replace them. Mario is doing what he has been doing for ages and that is what works. We all grew up playing him on 8bit consoles and what not.. so why should the young gamers have nothing to teach them the basics of gaming? 256bit gaming capabilities and HD should not mean all games should be aimed at 18+ who want to shoot each other in the face
Supermario bros was the first game some of us Properly played. Its fun, simple but still challenging.
Everyone likes a good racing game.. be it burnout, Gran Turismo, Project Gotham or Midnight Club but when have you had as much fun as playing Mario kart with a bunch of your friends?
Everyone is all for online gaming nowadays but that for me is not the BEST of gaming for me. For challenges and getting your gaming stripes? Indubitably but I have the most fun playing stupid games you can play on the wii... have a drink and a laugh and no one ends up upset (usually). Mario Galaxy is this equivalent of Supermario Bros for the 00's.
I say if you feel that Mario doesn't do it for you, accept that he isn't trying to. He is reaching out to kids, families and casual gamers who want good wholesome fun.
That is just my opinion though ^_^

Mario was awesome back in the day, then again so was donkey kong and space invaders.
I don't think new renditions of old games work, retro gaming is fine when your playing the retro game, not some modern rework.

Although Mario is a Nintendo icon, I think that every franchise has a shelf life. I think it would be wise for Nintendo to inject some new blood into their mascot dept., even though it's risky.

I don't follow his every move, but I still play plenty of Mario Party. I've always enjoyed Luigi far more, though. Could be the color scheme.

The old games were completely legendary, and are totally timeless, you can still while away the hours on Super Mario World, but Nintendo NEED a new character!

Simply a legend......A great man, i don't know where i'd be without him if im honest
as u can see i have taken form of an urban anime boondock type character, so my understanding of animation is a lil deeper....

mario rocks - i heart him (not so much luigi though).
i loved mario on snes & mario karts was cool too. but didn't really like the new 3d mario for n64... i think they tried to hard to modernise it and lost a lot of the classic elements that made mario great.
still two thumbs up for mario! hero. defo. x

To me, Mario is like the Cbeebies gaming.
The games were good when i was a kid, teaching me the abc's of video game thinking, but as i sit here playing Prototype, pwning helicopters with cars and getting shot at, i cant help but think that this is what i want in games now, not that colourful animated sparkly on mushrooms bullshit. Sorry Slick I saw you're a fan!
Heres the trailer for super Mario Galaxy 2. See what you think. I feel like ive been force fed a bag of sugar.

I agree with jamieson on this one. I think Mario will forever be a legend in the gaming world, for everything his titles have done for the first-time gamers and such. However he should be marketed towards the kids now, as I feel as a young adult, I could not take platform games seriously anymore if I had to sit and play another Mario game.
He's purely for the kids...

Considering that little plumber has been dragged into a parallel universe he remains a chirppy little sort doesn't he?
That kind of annoys me. Then again maybe he hasn't gone anywhere at all and he has just scoffed a load of mushrooms that have made him flip his lid?
If that is the case then thanks for letting us tag along for the ride Mario you crazy drugged up maniac!

Would rather buy a new game with new characters from Nintendo, then buy another Mario game. Same goes for most franchise game characters like Sonic.

Mario sold out when he embraced the third dimension (apart from Mario Kart for SNES--but he was flirting with disaster).

I can respect how he has helped carry nintendo all the way to its current high level of success. a good character and fun to watch people play almost any game with mario in it, but all that aside i have a personal problem with him because of the way he screams when he jumps, he also looks annoying as he has black facial hair and brown scalp head hair.
The concept is also rather silly and annoying; a plumber who rides a giant toad and can fit through pipes!!!

Mario fills me with an enormous sense of apathy, and I really hope they do something with the new platform game to get gamers excited about him again. Like make it really dark, that would be pretty cool.

I'm not a gamer, in fact the last thing I played more than 3 consecutive levels on was probably my NES back in the late 80's. I have a lot of respect for Shigeru Miyamoto because of the characters he has created for the gaming industry.
How did the dude manage to make a squeaky Italian plumber appealing to such a mass market?

Nintendo has been riding on their core titles to long. They really need to come up with some new IPs other than Wiiblank titles. I get tired of playing the same game generation after generation.
