Each and every one will (not) change the way we play games

Long before we had stacks of plastic guitars and enough withered dance mats to blanket all of San Francisco’s homeless, Nintendo was dropping superfluous add-ons at an alarming rate. And each time they shoved a new one out there, we lapped it up like a delicious treat, fully expecting longtime support for this latest and surely greatest peripheral.

Naturally most of them disappeared without fanfare, and support dried up as another object neared release. A rare few made a positive difference (Zapper, NES Satellite, Rumble Pak etc), but the vast majority were cast off with much haste. Collected here are the best of the worst, and no, there’s no Power Glove because that shit was made by Mattel.

    • I've got a Game Boy Printer, and a Transfer Pack somewhere.

      Surprised the GBA-to-Gamecube link cable didn't get a mention too.

    • The bongos for Donkey Conga were awesome!

      That said, there's not a designer in the world who can make any of these add-ons look attractive in your living room!

      The Wii itself is fugly!

    • Be thankful, I wasted days trying to shoot those bloody floating aliens, only to watch my missiles floating off in random directions. Super scope definitely needs to live here.

      Despite my disgust for Radar, they nailed this; Gameboy Camera and printer man! That was the worst as I wasted my cash on it when it first came out... However I think the Wiimote, deserved a spot here.

      PS- The Virtual Boy isn't a peripheral!

    • aha. the Power Pad. It took us all of an afternoon to learn that you could cheat at the games by tapping the buttons to make your guy run.

    • you can't make an omelette without breaking a few dozen eggs. if innovation was left up to sony and microsoft we would still have a joystick in our right hand and one red button for our left thumb.

This is about all the crap Nintendo sold us years ago like R.O.B and Super Scope 6 and slightly newer ones like the GameCube Mic and how Nintendo said they would support them and never did, not about bashing the Wii or its past consols or even innovation since some of these were never good. (GameBoy print and the mic)

      sure sure...don't mean to come off to fanboyish. with that said videogame companies generally take a loss on hardware and recoup on software. nintendo probably lost a great deal of money on all these failed attempts...as did the consumer. i never owned any of this crap. i never trusted that it would work.

    • I'm surprised the Virtual Boy didn't make the list. Granted it wasn't a peripheral, but it did follow the "Nintendo Doctrine" of having support for little less than a year before being tossed on the technological rubbish heap of video game history...to the eternal frustration of those who shelled out the $150 for the main system.

      (...in the interest of full-disclosure, I owned a Super Scope for my SNES back in the day)

    • Lol, I was so sad when the N64 transfer pak did... you know... that one thing. Glad they put in wiispeak too.
