I was sent a preview disc for this back in June, and I've got to say that I don't often have time for direct to DVD fare but this was a refreshing trip back to horror-proper.
After years of crappy "torture-porn" horror like Saw, Saw II, Saw 3000 and the hostels it was encouraging to see that good horrors can still be made without following that tired and pointless forumla.
To give you a summary of my full review (which you can check out here: http://www.filmshaft.com/review-red-mist) -
"Red Mist is a pretty good film as far as horror-flicks go, and it’s a film I’d be proud to have in my DVD collection, sure it’s low budget and there’s the occasional cliché here and there but all in all the film is original, polished and most importantly – interesting.
The cinematography is crisp and fresh, and the acting is almost note perfect. Add to that a handful of very original looking death sequences (who uses a funnel?) and you have yourself a pretty strong formula for a good horror film.
I quite readily applaud both the cast, and the director in this juicy little underdog of a movie. I can’t wait to see what Paddy Breathnach comes up with next!"
I had a thank you email from the writer (Spence Wright) after my review also which I thought was pretty cool. It was the first of his screenplays to ever make it to film, but I really can't wait to see what he comes up with next!

i'm a big fan of horror.... but this looks dumb and pretty poor. I'm purely judging it on the trailer of course. Oh and the fact it's from the director of Shrooms!!?? That film was one of the worst films I've seen in quite some time.

I wish they hadn’t changed the name of Red Mist. It used to be called Freakdog, which makes sense if you watch the movie, but I suppose audiences would have been upset at the lack of mutant canines in the film if it had come out under that title...
It’s a decent enough premise for a horror flick, but the movie constantly seems to be struggling against its lack of cash. All the money seems to have gone on casting Arielle Kebbel (John Tucker Must Die, The Grudge 2) and Sarah Carter (TV’s Shark), as well as some gory effects, leaving little cash left for anything else. The result is a very cheap looking movie that can’t quite decide what it wants to be...
Red Mist is a movie full of neat little moments. The first part is good, the middle not bad and the ending could be worse. It’s just a shame each section feels like it’s from a completely different film.
