Transformers fan drinks gasoline for "energy", gets brain damage instead

Image
PsychoAlan
A boy who was desperate to “power up” after watching “Transformers” started drinking gasoline in emulation of the mechanical heroes of the film, suffering permanent brain damage as a result.

The boy, a 14-year-old schoolboy living in China’s Sichuan area, apparently enjoyed good grades and was good with machines, perhaps explaining his fascination with Transformers.

His parents running a shop selling lighters, he found himself with ready access to lighter fluid, which he began covertly snuffing, in spite of being caught several times. Soon he progressed to filching gasoline in bottles and using the vapours to get high with.

    • it sounds more likely he drank the gasoline to get more high, rather than he was influenced by The Transformers film.
I like how it says the addiction started in 2004, when the first Transformers film was out in 2007. I doubt they're talking about the old cartoons too.

    • This reminds me of our drug counselor in high school who once gave an inspiring pep talk to my class on how, if you drink a tiny bit of bleach each day, you'll eventually build up a tolerance and be able to drink 'a whole jug. Neat party trick, right kids?'

    • He got hooked on the effects of lighter fuel and petrol - if he's influenced by that film to such an effect, I'd say it would be only a matter of time before something else started to destroy his life if this had not.

And the parents who allowed this to happen for 5 years?! Something weird with that.

    • did he really drink it? and did he genuinely think he was like he was in transformers? That doesn't sound normal. He may not be an idiot (good grades, etc). But maybe he has some form of personality disorder or something?

As for the experts, they're probably just experts in addiction and maybe solvent abuse.

EDIT: just read the actual article. He really did seem to drink it.

    • "We will invite some experienced experts to help the kid kick the gasoline addiction," the doctor said.

Uh, are there really that many 'expereienced experts' out there who know how to deal with 'gasoline addiction'? As far as I knew, humans drinking gasoline wasn't really a problem of epidemic proportions.
