TV has had a good run, but things have changed. What was once a miracle of the modern age (well, the fifties) has become a turgid slush-pile of recycled idiocy, stuffed to the gills with pap and choking to death on its own acidic advertising reflux. There are still good shows. Very good shows in fact. But they're outnumbered to a Custerian level by stupefying nonsense intended mainly to fill the gaps between "important messages from our sponsors".

So while we often bang on about games not being interchangeable with other media, we reckon there's a good case for games replacing TV. Looking at the reasons people watch certain shows, it's become increasingly obvious that games can provide equivalent if not better experiences, and without the creeping sense of dissipating IQ points to boot. So unplug the aeriel cable, stick in another HDMI and give that screen a healthier second life.

    • Yeah.....but you gotta invest far more time and energy in games than you do just watching a tv episode. People do have other shit to be getting on with and personally I use tv (or tv shows on box set) to unwind. I like the disposablity of it (dont get me wrong most of it is garbage - I'm talking more along the lines of The Wire and Chalrlie Brooker) but It's an hour tops and doesn't cut into more important things.

      (Unless you watch Lost- in which case you become a social recluse)

      But TIME = MONEY
      GAMES (good ones) = TIME CONSUMPTION

      no?

    • I'd love to see games slowly creep into people's living rooms and replace a lot of the crap we see on the boob tube, but I think the majority of Americans are too lazy to actually have to think when relaxing. Most people enjoy becoming vegetables while staring at shitty sitcoms.

      I agree with this point entirely. People just like to be passive, and watching a sitcom (no matter how bad it is) is a lot less work than learning controls and playing through a story.

      Also, television can be equally enjoyed by many people in the same room. Video games have a max amount of players, and single player campaigns aren't always fun to watch for others.

    • That might be true, but then, once the Internet has enough PC games, then the Internet can detroy the remians of the Tv, and then games, and then the radio, and finally the newspaper, magzines, etc..

      {"Internet"} > {"Tv, Radio, Games, Media"}
