Researchers have captured rare footage of a mysterious upside-down lightning bolt. The 'gigantic jets' of lightning shoot upwards from thunderclouds into the ionosphere.
Recorded on film only five times since the first observation in 2001, these findings show that gigantic jets release considerable electrical charge from the surface of the Earth to the edge of space. What happens to the upper atmosphere when the bolts discharge their electricity is not currently known.
