Dems Take Gloves Off: "Republicans Want To End Medicare"

atomiclegion
Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele penned an op-ed in the Washington Post on Monday accusing Democrats of looking to gut Medicare.

Five days later -- on the eve of a three-day weekend -- Democrats are hitting back.

Republicans are no friends of seniors, a new ad from the Democratic National Committee argues. The party is reminding voters that Republicans opposed Medicare from the beginning and in recent years have even voted to end it for younger generations.

The GOP did, in fact, oppose Medicare when President Lyndon Johnson signed it into law and conservative elements of the party have long sought to end it.

In 1996, GOP presidential candidate Bob Dole bragged about voting against it in 1965. "I was there, fighting the fight, voting against Medicare . . . because we knew it wouldn't work in 1965," Dole said, according to the DNC.

Obama has proposed cutting the Medicare Advantage -- a Republican designed, privatized boondoggle that costs roughly 12 percent more than regular Medicare -- to offset spending increases associated with health care reform.

a huge amount? if by huge amount you mean a high proportion of your friends, then i think you have an unrepresentative sample...

and no, nothing you can say or do can piss me off. i derive my happiness internally. not from what pseudo anonymous bloggers say on a message board.

the majority of people still have tact and class, something you two are clearly missing by calling a recently deceased senator, who fought his entire life for those less fortunate than himself, a murderer.

where is your forgiveness? where is your compassion? or are those emotions foreign to you...

    • Actually, the current democratic health care bill will really end Medicare. It'll be absorbed into the National Health care system. Facts can be enlightening.

oh no! they're going to change the name?! be afraid seniors! be afraid! clearly obama wants to euthanize you!

medicare by any other name would operate just as efficiently... saying otherwise would be making assumptions

In fact it's not even a name change. HR3200 mandates some changes to what medicare can and can't cover (it mostly adds coverage btw), but it doesn't absorb medicare. They're two completely seperate things.

In fact, it's not even a 'National Healthcare Plan'. At it's very core this bill is nothing more than abolishing the price fixing and rationing that occurs in the private insurance plans.

For the love of whatever god you follow: please check your facts and vote accordingly. Why not start here: http://www.factcheck.org/2009/08/twenty-six-lies-about-hr-3200/

    • of course they hate medicare, they hate all things government...

except when they get their paycheck... or if it's the military... or when the government gave religion tax exempt status... or if patents are extended... or if it's a conservative judge legislating from the bench...

at the end of the day, it's as if they don't believe in the ability of people to self-govern

      check your constitution please:

"We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."

directly after mentioning the "common defense," it says "promote the general welfare." How does healthcare not fall under general welfare? you can make a cogent argument that health care is the only aspect of the general welfare

      article 1, section 8, clause 1:

"The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States"

    • Aka , Ihathemall, there are compounds up in Idaho that would love to have a few more guys like you. No butter knives there but plenty of good ole boys that would be in total agreement with you. Or if you find this site too liberal for you I think that you would find stormfront.com right up your alley.
