The discovery of a biological gatekeeper that prevents genetic code from fraying with age has won a trio of American scientists this year's Nobel prize for medicine.

The prestigious award – and the 10m Swedish kronor (£818,000) prize money – is shared by Elizabeth Blackburn, 60, Carol Greider, 48, and Jack Szostak, 56. It is the first time the prize has honoured two women at once.

    • ...first Australian woman to win Nobel Prize...

Blackburn was born in Hobart, Tasmania. Her parents, Harold and Marcia Blackburn, were both medical practitioners. Blackburn attended Broadland House School in Launceston, Tasmania. Her family then moved to Melbourne, Victoria, where she attended the University High School, Melbourne. After graduation from high school, Blackburn attended the University of Melbourne, residing in Janet Clarke Hall (University of Melbourne), where she earned her B.Sc. degree in 1970, and her M.Sc. degree in 1972, and Darwin College, Cambridge,[1] where she earned her Ph.D. (1975) from the University of Cambridge. Her postdoctoral study in molecular and cellular biology was at Yale University, Connecticut in 1975–77...

    • Former President Bush had the foresight to actually fire one of these scientist for not agreeing with his awesome wisdom, Ms Blackburn was relieved of her position for challenging Bush on stem cell research. Who's laughing now cowboy?

That aurgument was to a specific type of stem cell research, not stem cell research itself.
Those that fought for embryonic stem cell resaerch have egg on their face because those cells are not useful because they are very limited in life cycle and applications.
Stemcells harvested from the individual worked much better than embryonic stem cells even at that time and without need for embryos.
It was an argument over ethics not reasearch but many never stopped to understand that.
It was wrongfully hyped in the media as being the first step in ending legal abortions.
      That's not what it was.
There were abortion clinics selling placentas as well as embryos and there was financial incentive to sell more!(ie. to makeup and beauty supply manufacturers, etc...)

    • Fantastic, keep it up!
Hopefully the funding for medical research in USA doesn't dry up in the near future.....
Major kudos, for all the dedication and work to find this. Research can be so grueling and unrewarding.
      Onward and upward!

    • This is beautiful. I love the fact that science keeps advancing, opening our eyes to the true explanation of life. One day these kinds of discoveries will put the final nail in the coffin of religious explanations of the way the universe operates, and we can then stop killing each other over religious disagreements. Congratulations to these brilliant scientists!

Most religious arguments are over how everything got here in the first place or what happens after. Not how everything works. Though props do go to scientific and technological advancement . I love it just as much as the next guy. + the fact that two of the three scientists are women makes it even better.
