World's Historic Monuments at Risk

"Peru's Machu Picchu ancient ruins, Antoni Gaudi's Sagrada Familia church in Barcelona and a New Orleans elementary school are among the cultural heritage sites threatened by neglect or overdevelopment, a preservationist group said Tuesday.

The World Monuments Fund's watch list for 2010 includes 93 sites in 47 countries, ranging from Phajoding, a remote monastery in Bhutan, to the bridges along Connecticut's scenic Merritt Parkway.

"The 2010 watch makes it clear that cultural heritage efforts in the 21st century must recognize the critical importance of sustainable stewardship and that we must work closely with local partners to create viable and appropriate opportunities to advance this," World Monuments Fund President Bonnie Burnham said."

    • I have been wanting to see Gaudi's Sagrada Familia for years! And Machu Picchu?! And Kyoto?! Unbelievable. This is not good, it's all about economic benefits but what about our historic past?

    • Governments only care about profits, greed, and prosperity for themselves. Nothing will change, they can't even consider the changes in climate nonetheless care about overdevelopment.

    • Important, but depressing, story. Like NuclearLullaby said hopefully raising awareness will help. Humans just don't seem to prize anything until it's gone.

    • It's a sad fact that some of the world's great monuments will indeed be gone in our life time! Even with a lot of world sites being more carefully looked after these days there are many that aren't so looked after! Without bracing put in place a few years ago, the leaning tower of Pisa would have fell! Tourism in some areas actually is helping raise awareness,as are a few TV shows,But it's very unclear just how long some sites will be around!
