In spite of Dow/Carbide's refusal to admit any culpability, and in spite of the spin created by company PR agencies, the survivors have managed to generate some legal challenges for them.

@ Progresshiv Thank You for Sharing, Amazing what society has become and could be headed to, if people continue to refuse to think and start living as peaceful and considerate co-habitants of the planet.

I got my best lesson in high finance in 1985 when I attended a stockholders' meeting of the Templeton Mutual Fund on the top floor of the World Trade Center tower in New York. There were about 75 people in a conference room that overlooked the Battery, the Statue of Liberty, and Ellis Island.
John Templeton, a white-haired millionaire, spoke briefly about money being an integral part of what he called "progress in religion" and then took questions from the audience.
A man stood up in the aisle, approached the microphone, and asked Templeton, what the Templeton Fund's position was on Union Carbide, considering the tragic accident in Bhopal. Templeton replied that immediately after the accident, Union Carbide stock dropped quickly, so the Templeton Fund rushed to buy the now-devalued Union Carbide stock, in order to profit from the situation.
This brief but revelatory explanation of "progress in religion" was followed by a general rush to the dessert cart, where a dowager in expensive clothing threw my five-year-old son to the ground in order to reach the cake before he did.

Apart from cleaning it up, there's the issue of health issues still being felt , then the lost of loved ones. Something needs to be done.

Unfortunately, there's probably no way to actually clean up the city. You'd really have to just abandon it.
I was lucky enough to baksheesh my way into the old Union Carbide plant on a recent trip to India. It was a very creepy place, with rusted out tanks that once held phosgene and all manner of decaying machinery, all housed in falling down tin sheds. You could tell how pathetic and unsafe the whole site was, even in it's golden days. The water in our hotel, several miles away, was milky pink. - 2 years ago
