High speed rail for the I-5 corridor is receiving a big stimulus push which is good news for the Pacific Northwest in general and Portland -Seattle commuters in particular. As promised by President Barack Obama during his State of the Union address, the White House has announced $8 billion in high-speed rail spending. $598 million will come directly to the Pacific Northwest.

The money is from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The funds will be used to improve the rail lines between Portland and Seattle. The bulk of the money, $590 million, will go to Washington state for projects related to high-speed rail. Another $8 million will go to Portland, Oregon for improvements at the city's Union Station.
