BREAKING: Wisconsin Police Have Joined Protest Inside State Capitol

Written by Jenn Breckenridge - The Understory

From inside the Wisconsin State Capitol, RAN ally Ryan Harvey reports:

“Hundreds of cops have just marched into the Wisconsin state capitol building to protest the anti-Union bill, to massive applause. They now join up to 600 people who are inside.”

Ryan reported on his Facebook page earlier today:

“Police have just announced to the crowds inside the occupied State Capitol of Wisconsin: ‘We have been ordered by the legislature to kick you all out at 4:00 today. But we know what’s right from wrong. We will not be kicking anyone out, in fact, we will be sleeping here with you!’ Unreal.”

UPDATE: This video says it all. It makes me proud of my neighbors. “Let me tell you Mr. Walker, this is not your house, this is all our house.”

    • We have a crack in the wall, one of the republican senators has announced he will not support the union busting bill as written. Additionally the police have chose not to remove the protesters from the capital building.
The people are speaking and are being heard.

Gov. Walker ordered the police to kick peaceful protesters off public property. Those people would not have left willingly, and force would have been used to remove the protesters. The Police Officers were right in what they did, and I am so proud of my Countrymen, willing to stand up for their rights, even if it means standing up against an oppressive State Government.

The Police disobeyed an unlawful order. It was a very brave, and courageous thing to do. I could not be prouder, and today I feel confident in saying that "We are all citizens of Wisconsin."

      I stand with you.

    • I think Walker had hoped that by excluding law enforcement and firefighters, it would keep them off the picket lines. I hope for his continued miscalculation.

Together with the clergy, law enforcement and firefighters make up the three-legged stool that is the virtue and value support establishment of most communities. When they all line up with the citizens they serve on the opposite side of a argument, that issue has no chance of success.

    • All I know is the state governments are going broke and some of these union members need to cut back on their greed. It's not a god given right to have free medical insurance. Citizens all over our country are getting laid off or having to cut back on their budgets to make it. Yeah you have a good ride when the money wasnt an issue, but we are in a financial crisis, which means we can't afford all the freeloaders and dead weight. Stop being so greedy..on both sides of the asile.

      Wow. Your claims in order:

      1) Unions didn't cause states to go broke, Wall Street did. Blaming this on Unions is like blaming the burst housing bubble on transients.

      2) It's not greedy to want fair compensation for your work. Public sector workers already endure a total compensation (that's wages and benefits) that substantially less than they could make in the private sector with their skills and education.

      3) Their medical insurance is part of their total compensation. What your advocating is to cut the pay of middle class Americans who you've decided to scapegoat for your problems.

      4) When the country is in a recession like this, government employees' workloads go up, not down. All those private sector workers that got laid off now need government assistance, which translates to more work. But you want to lay off the people who do that work, thus compromising essential government services when people need them most. That's logical?

      5) Only a moron would call a whole segment of the workforce "freeloaders and dead weight." You ought to be ashamed of yourself.

      6) Again, public sector workers already took a pay cut in December, and agreed to the pay cuts Scott Walker demanded. He gave huge tax cuts to the people that bought him the Governor's office, and now he wants to plug the hole he created in the budget with middle class Wisconsinites. And you cheer him on.

Yeah, man! So right! Cops, firefighters, nurses, prison guards, plow operators, teachers, etc! They're not WORKING at all, they just sit back and getting fat! We SHOULD do exactly like you say and fire them all, and see just how much better society is for it! They SHOULD get smart and stop sacrificing themselves for half the pay they'd receive in the private sector, and stop taking care of the sick and elderly, keeping our streets and homes save, and educating our children!

BTW I love how you try a feigned attempt at actually trying to sound moderate at the end with your "mheh mheh both sides of the aisle" schtick, despite all the rampant right-wing nonsense you've been spewing all day. Why don't you ask your corporate master to stop being greedy and pay their taxes for once!

If Walker and the republiwon't legislators in WI are serious about balancing the budget that got out of balance when that idiot gov gave away the surplus to his corporate buddies, let them give up their wages for the remainder of their time in office. Don't talk about how unions are bleeding the states dry when all these illustrious gov't crackpots are keeping their paychecks.

Well said!. why should the public sector workers pay more, when the economy is still not well. It will only make the little improvement we've made go down again. These governors didn't handle the tax money very well or they wouldn't be in debt.

    • A busload of eastern Iowa union members is headed to Wisconsin to support workers protesting their governor's proposal to limit union rights.

KCRG-TV reports that the bus that left Cedar Rapids Saturday morning was paid for by Scott Smith, president of the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City Building Trades Council. Smith said union workers going on the trip believe that teachers and workers who plow snow and clean streets deserve fair wages.

    • Divide and water cannons?

The bill that Republicans have rammed through the lower house of the Wisconsin Legislature ends bargaining rights of all public employees, but with police, firefighters and state troopers being exempted by law.

More silently and like Kadafi, the empowered man at the top will need to make certain that all of his Exempt Guard is unswervingly loyal to him. It should not take long to cull out any misfits and troublemakers like the off-duty officers that have joined the people.

But will the Wisconsin National Guard’s allegiance be to Commanding Governor Walker or as in Egypt will the military forces stand with the demonstrating people?

Though Governor Valker does not enjoy the firepower provide by a Krupp Munitions Works, or access to IG Farben’s lethal chemical Zyklon B, he has the ear of David Koch and funds must be expended to arm loyal firefighters with water cannon to quell the rabble in the street.

    • The cops realize they are meant to serve the people not the corpirate emperors.
If the national guard are called up I hope they come to the same conclusion that the army in Egypt came to, their job is to protect the people not to serve the whims of a dictator.

    • The president knows what he is doing his coming here would give the media, walker, and the republicans a lot of ammunition as to the cost to the tax payers of wisconsin for all the expences involved. Also I really believe he is getting done what he wants which is getting the people to step up and get involved in their state and also in their federal government. When 2012 and 2014 comes around what are they going to remember when they go to polls a few hours when the president came to madison or the weeks on end that the police, firefighters, teachers and protesters took on the political and big money people that came to take over wisconsin. The republican representatives who cast their vote in favor of this bill it is to late but you republican senators better get out of your offices and take a good long look at all those people out there your vote will have a lot of bearing on your success in elections in the near future.

    • I found this great post on MD site. Supporting Unions. Part 2

What about those special education teachers and the ones with Master’s degrees? Well, we could pay them minimum wage ($7.75), and just to be fair, round it off to $8.00 an hour. That would be $8 X 6 1/2 hours X 30 children

      X 180 days = $280,800 per year.

Wait a minute — there’s something wrong here! There sure is!

The average teacher’s salary (nation wide) is $50,000. $50,000/180 days = $277.77/per day/30 students=$9.25/6.5 hours = $1.42 per hour per student–a very inexpensive baby-sitter and they even EDUCATE your kids!)

      WHAT A DEAL!!!!

    • At this point in time, it is not the place of the U.S. President to step in and end what has been peaceful protest. This is still a "state jurisdictional matter", and must be allowed to play out. This is the will of the people of the state of Wisconsin, voicing and demonstrated their disapproval of their newly elected governor. At this point, federal interference is not afforded by the constitution!

I think your name is emblematic of everything that's wrong with the right. It implies you're a patriotic American and then you rip everything that made this country an economic and industrial powerhouse and the envy of the world. This country had it's best years when unions were strong. If you knew your history, you'd be forced to acknowledge the simple truth of what I'm saying.

The fact is you're simply anti-liberal and assume, without any critical analysis, that because the left supports unions, unions are bad. I find that pathetic. If in fact unions hadn't become the target of extremely wealthy people like the Koch boys, you wouldn't see millions of jobs being outsourced by US corporations.

I don't know if you have a job, or are even old enough to have one. Regardless, it's only a matter of time before people like yourself become victims of their own foolishness. Peace.

The Left does not hate the police. The Left does not hate our soldiers. We're just pissed off when the police abuse their power. Oh, and we hate WARS because they kill innocent people and our brave soldiers for no reason. AND they cost too damn much money. We should be taking care of our own country's citizens instead of invading other countries and killing their citizens–for no apparent reason.

    • It appears as though the wind is changing, and has the possibility of getting behind our sails. This is the time to act, to raise our main sail and catch the wind to reform. Wisconsin is one issue on a long laundry list which we must address, now! Now is the time to demand that corporate interference be eliminated from our government. Now is the time to demand total campaign finance reform, and get the Kochs of America out of our legislatures! Now is the time to make it illegal for our Congressmen to accept any money from outside and special interests! Because all of this, is why we are having to protest in Wisconsin, Indiana and Ohio. We can't just let it rest in Wisconsin, we have to take it to the nation's capitol. Email your congressmen and the president and demand that any and all special interest money be banned from government, and, total reform of campaign finance now! Get the Kochs out of Congress, Once, and, For All!

Actually, I think he's handling this the right way. The middle class is waking up and seeing Republicans for what they are. This is a moment that belongs entirely to organized labor, and it's beautiful in its simplicity and awesome in its power. If the President of the United States were to step into what is currently a local matter, it would cheapen the accomplishment of this unified force.

President Obama should continue to stand in solidarity with the workers, but he should not get involved until this episode concludes, one way or another. Besides, if this bill gains passage in the Wisconsin Senate, millions of dollars in Federal grants from several agencies will be retracted due to the subsequent violation of Davis-Bacon. That's where the President really makes himself heard.
