Daughter: WWI vet should lie in Capitol Rotunda
The Associated Press
Saturday, March 5, 2011; 6:11 PM
CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. -- The daughter of the longest-living American to serve in World War I urged lawmakers to let her father, Frank Buckles, lie in the Capitol Rotunda to honor all the war's veterans.
"There is no one left," Susannah Buckles Flanagan wrote in a statement to The Associated Press. "If we lost the opportunity to bestow this highest of honors on the person who was the last surviving representative, there can be no making it up later."
Buckles died Feb. 27 at age 110.
Leaders in Washington have been divided over how to best honor Buckles and the 4.7 million other Americans who served during World War I.
West Virginia lawmakers want to see him lie in the Capitol Rotunda, and are upset with House and Senate leaders who have objected.

I, for one, believe that Mr. Buckies should be so honored by lying in state at the Rotunda. Mr. Buckies, I salute you sir.

He should have been honored before he passed away. I love our "we can make things right" mentality in Washington.

It was bi-partisan. Boehner and Reid made the decision. Both of WV's senators, both Dems, asked for the Rotunda viewing.

What's the world coming to. Next thing you know war will be obsolete.
I have no problem with honoring the service of veterans. I am a veteran. But the problem happens when veterans' service becomes associated with war itself. So it then appears we are honoring war and America's imperialism, racist genocide, and corporate warmongering oligarchy.
Any honors given to veterans should be done outside of the government. It can be in DC just like the wall for Vietnam vets. But it should not be sanctioned by the government which deceives it's very own servicemen to commit war crimes in the name of false nationalism, a disguise for corporate greed. 10,000 GIs have committed suicide since 9/11. That's twice the number killed in action. They suffer from PTSD, a nice pretty acronym for going nuts because they were forced to kill innocent people, women, children, and babies as part of their daily routine. Go out and kill a few babies yourself before you go around telling people how to feel about war veterans.

If only war would become obsolete! I agree with all you say, except for the part about honoring veterans outside of the government.. I guess I don't see that as a sanction, but as a way of thanking all for their service.
BTW, thank you for your service!

The rotunda is a sanction of the US government, the same government that orders troops to fight and die in vain. It is not appropriate. Have a memorial. But not on US government property. That would be the same as a mother honoring her murdered son's life by having the funeral service in the murder's home.

Boehner and Sen. Reid should be absolutely ashamed of themselves. They colluded in this despicable act of bi-partisanship. All of WV's delegation (Repubs and Dems) support this. We should be honoring Mr Buckles for what he did and instead we get games. Boehner and Reid are ass-hats for this one.
