Palin inspired symbols of hate turn up in Canada.

Image
bambuu
Disturbing graffiti has turned up on Liberal campaign posters in an Ottawa-area riding, stirring up parallels to the anti-politician rhetoric that became an issue in the U.S. earlier this year.

More than 100 signs for Ryan Keon, the Liberal candidate in Nepean-Carleton, were spray-painted Friday night with rifle-target symbols over Keon’s face, as well as “graphic and explicit” messages, according to the campaign team.

In Tucson in January, a gunman trying to kill Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords opened fire in a supermarket — a rampage that left six dead, 13 injured and Giffords critically injured with a gunshot wound to the head.

In the aftermath, some drew a direct connection between the attack and the anti-politician rhetoric that was being whipped up by Sarah Palin, former Republican vice-presidential candidate and now a star of the Tea Party movement. Shortly before the Tucson attack, Palin had included Gifford’s face in an ad that drew rifle crosshairs on politicians’ faces, with the slogan: “Don’t retreat, reload.”

The vandals who spray-painted the target signs on Keon’s face this past weekend also scrawled epithets denouncing Liberals and “tree huggers.”

This is the REAL legacy of Sarah Palin. This is what she has helped to usher onto the political stage in America, that has now bled over into the lives of our Canadian neighbors.

She may be a joke, but she is also becoming a symbol of hate and partisanship in the world.

Whether it be the anti-Muslim sentiment in this country, the hatred directed toward our President, or the vilification of progressive politicians , all of these extreme positions are fairly covered with Palin fingerprints. She may not have been the originator but, just like the "Drill Baby, Drill," "Death Panels," and the "Obama pals around with terrorists" memes, she is the one to push divisive talking points until they spread like a plague, first throughout our country, and then throughout the world.

If this hateful creature is not convinced to sit down and shut up soon, I see day when anarchists will drop the use of Hitler as a symbol of their anti-societal stance, and instead embrace the likeness of Sarah Louise Palin, as the mother of American domestic terrorism. You just mark my words.

We have successfully managed to stop the political candidate, but how do we stop the symbol? (And before anybody suggests it, no, violence is not the answer!)

    • I have now lived in Canada for over 40 years (lucky to marry a Canadian). This is the first year that I have seen such vitriol from the Conservatives, even before the election was called. We usually have a two to three month election cycle (and I'm glad that it usually doesn't drag on like it does in the States). This time around the Conservatives started their smear campaign before Christmas. I also heard that Harper visited Fox News while in the States meeting with President Obama. Thank god there are still rules up here that you cannot lie in the news. I just fear if Harper gets the majority that he is seeking we can start kissing our social programs goodbye and change how the news is reported. He is very sneaky and I do not trust him.

Also, ever since Sarah Palin came on the scene, it brought to the main stream the nasty rhetoric coming from the GOP in the States. They seem to have no shame calling the President of the United States such awful names and blaming everything that happens in the world on him. If the left had said such things about Bush (the worst President ever, in my opinion) they would have been called traitors or worst.

This nasty rhetoric started spreading to Canada in the last few years. Especially in Ontario. The NRA tried to get involved with Canada's gun laws - which didn't go over well here. As Canadians do not cotton to lobbist. But Fox News and people like Sarah Palin are having an influence in Canada that scares me. I have been warning everyone I know that if they become empathic like they are in the US we are in trouble. Some don't understand how closely Canada is tied to the US, expecially economically. We have been lucky so far during the recession because we have the best banking regulation in the world. I hope this never changes.

I hope that with the great awakening in the States as a result of the GOP overstepping with Unions, the silent majority will finally say enough is enough and demand more from their representatives. This can only help in both the States in Canada.

Now is can silence the hatred shown to Muslims we would live in a better world.

LOLS really? A Canadian blaming Pain for rhetoric in politics.... Gees tool, look into your own colonial history. Canada is no stranger to explosive rhetoric however most of you guys have just blown it off and not paid much attention to it, as you should. Take it for what it is and just shake your head in discust.

There are plenty of examples of this type of rhetoric since the dawn of the printing press. Hell the press was practically invented to spread political rhetoric and without it we would not have had revolutions that led to both our countries. Granted you didn't have to revolt after we did but you had similar problems in becoming a country

The only reason that rhetoric seems more vitriol is because we have become so politically correct, hyper sensitive, easily offended asshats. Add to the current 24 hour media cycle and instant access to information over load. But trying to blame Palin or that she had anything to do with a foreign countries politics is as intellectually dishonest as blaming her for a madman with a gun.

But hey you have to blame someone right? It is not like libs ever blame those actually responsible for their actions when you can scream racism, hatred, homophobia, and the like.

I thought you guys were tough in Canada and look at stuff like this like it is a stupid political stunt for which it is. How about blaming the idiot that actually did it and prosecute him for destruction of private property if it is such a horrible crime.

Yeah it sounded retarded but I highly doubt it was someone actually involved in his campaign and if possibly so, definitely not instructed to do so. Usually things like this are done by an individual with issues and should be held accountable. Not Palin or anyone else for that matter.

Knowing Harper, I would honestly not be surprised if he wasn't somehow connected with this. The man's the worst PM for Canada - having been the only one to be found in contempt of Parliament, never mind all the other crap he's been found responsible for - and I don't think there is any lengths he wouldn't go to get a majority seat, which is just not happening here.

Was the graffiti performed by Canadian citizens, or did some United States citizens who are extremely conservative and really have too much time on their hands head up there to do this?

    • Communisim is a form of socialism that abolishes private ownership. I'll admit i'm not the sharpest tool in the shed and if i need correcting, please feel free to do so. The greatest thing about freedom is our right to say what we want and talk to others about ideas. That's why I'm here stating what I believe so I can hear what other people think about it. Thank you all for your facts and opinions. I appreciate them wether you agree with me or not.

Excuse me! Live free or die? "Live free or die" may sound good to some, but what does it mean? Would you suggest that people commit suicide if they don't feel like they are free? Perhaps you think that people should start physical warring against each other, if they don't feel free. How about children? They certainly don't feel free. Should children take up arms against authority figures?
As far as socialism goes, what kind are you talking about? There is more than one kind. Or do you really think that privatization would bring us "true freedom"? With privatization we can pay more for things like: prisons, schools, roads, and the military.

    • Damn the libs are afraid of her. A reticle is not a "Palin inspired symbol of hate". What Palin used to define her "targets" were surveyors symbols, they were not reticles. Get a grip. I notice many here said nothing about the real reticles on Scott Walkers picture in the Wisconsin rallies. "Palin inspired symbols" indeed. This is as big a crock as the left whining about wanting "civility" which quickly vanished when it served their purpose to do so. Next thing we know the left will be blaming changes in orbit to the planet Mars on Palin. The left always seems to need someone to pummel to make themselves feel better or stronger.

The Average Joe doesn't know the difference between Surveyor's Symbols and Reticles. To them, they all look like Crosshairs.

You know the left has a reputation of being "push-overs". I think it's about time they stand-up to the opposition. You can talk about "leftist hate" all you want, but at least they can admit to it, and back it up with things like Reason, Logic, and Historical Facts.
Republicans, and especially Fox News can speak fire & brimstone about their opposition; call them anarchists, Hitler, nazis, etc. Yet when someone calls them on it i.e. Jon Stewart, they then say that they NEVER use those terms. -And then all we have to do is go back a few days or hours to find examples of the same people using the names they claim that they are not.
It's completely hypocritical. ...and yes. I can find the video footage to prove it.
Fox News is spreading bigotry, lies, ignorance, and hatred throughout the country.
I'm glad Canada was smart enough to keep them out of their country.

You are absolutely correct about the lack of recognition of reticles. Guilt by association by the mindless I guess. About the rest of your post you are dead wrong. The lies, bigotry and hatred is coming from the left and believe me, there is plenty. All I need to do to see this is to look at many replies to my posts. The left will tolerate no differing ideas, they are obsessed with statism and destroying the individual, confiscation of wealth, ignoring the Constitution, promoting violence and the list goes on. They are also very good at blaming the other side of the aisle for exactly what they do. The irrational fear of a news network, Fox, is an example of the phobias above. Ditto the irrational fear of Palin etc. I am sure many would like to see Fox prohibited from broadcasting as you say Canada has done. This is an example of my point and the left makes it very well. Would you like to see a news network you agree with put off the air by the government because some bureaucrat has deemed it not worthy of airtime. This is very dangerous but it is the left. In contrast, I would not like to see MSNBC or their people put off the air. We need to air contrary views even if we did not have the First Amendment. We need to return to the Constitution not destroy it.

The symbols Palin put on her map denoting voting "targets" were, in fact, surveyors symbols. "Don't retreat, reload" is a sentence not a symbol and exhorts the people not to give up in their quest to not give in to the opposition. I'm not sure what you are talking about with the "personal responsibility" remark unless it is your intention to provide some sort of nexus between surveyors marks and the Giffords shooting. That is a stretch and pretty much vanquishes the "personal responsibility" wish you have.

Oh Please Paratus, Give us all a break here. Yes they were targets, with her constantly harping about not retreating reloading, real Americans, Painting anyone not agreeing with her as evil, the enemy, needed to be taken out, hanging with terrorists, doesn't love their country, socialists, et al . The reference's and rally calls all refers to guns, protecting ones life, defining the 'enemy' defense, war, and fighting.

Her Intent was to move 2ed amendment supporters and rally them to get out and vote for tea, who also are strong advocates of guns, and even carried some to rallies. Her political speak was not directed to land surveyors. I've never heard her ramble on about land surveyors, or attempt to motivative land surveyor to get out the vote. The excuse that you're using fails on every rational and logical level, because nothing that she's done backs up your claim the sights were meant to survey the land. Had she refrained at all from using Gun speak, you'd have a point, but that's not what happened, and that's not who she is. The first time anyone even heard this absurd excuse was by her PR women, no one who's watched Palin for more then 5 minutes buys it, except maybe her apologists. She needed some political reaching to cover her gross unprofessional behavior of putting out the target map in the first place.

She is not directly responsible for the shooting, she is absolutely responsible for inciting violence, her hateful rhetoric, and choice to keep advocating guns as a solution. Why was the map taken off her FB page soon after the shooting?

The Right is always talking about Personal responsibility, they rarely follow their own mantra, but are always pointing fingers. Just like here, hold her responsible for her egregious actions, demand she take the high road and refrain from the hate speech towards those who she views and calls not real Americans just because they don't agree with her politics.

I bet if you surveyed anyone right now and ask them who they associated crosshairs with, I bet most would say Palin. Of course, that depends on how the question is framed.

And if Palin hadn't created her crosshairs political map, do you really think any of this would have been recreated on someone else, my guess would be, no?

In law they have a term called 'guilty by association' which means Palin will most likely forever be associated with this kind of incendiary violent rhetoric.

Perhaps you should have just said "Palin will alwasy be associated with the crosshairs image, she created that image -OF- herself. But please don't be an Palin apologist"

One simple preposition can change an entire sentance.

    • My point is people are going to hate no matter what you do. Blame hate on who you want, but pointing fingers won't solve anything. It's a social problem, not one person's fault.

    • Again I reiterate the "crosshairs" in political ads did not originate with her! They have been around since the McCarthy era in Washington, and would have been around since the American Revolution if "crosshairs" had existed then.

Just because she spreads the hate doesn't mean she is the master mind of her efforts.

Still please feel free to have no respect for the hatemongering, weak willed, and self righteous Palin tho...by the old gods we all I know I do.

I know right? People just want to create a story where none exists because it fits their agenda yet nothing is said when the libs do the same thing. Really? Palin old Canadians to paint crosshairs on posters? And that = hate? LOLS the over active imaginations of reporters and their followers.
