The bureau extended the invitations to Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan., for training this spring at two bureau facilities in Virginia: Quantico and Manassas.
Westboro has stirred widespread outrage with raucous demonstrations at the funerals of U.S. military service members. The group contends God is punishing the military for the nation's tolerance of homosexuality.
National Public Radio first reported the FBI's involvement with Westboro.
At FBI headquarters in Washington, bureau spokesman Paul Bresson acknowledged that Westboro was invited to the training sessions.
An FBI official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter, said that in retrospect, the bureau underestimated how the involvement of the outside organization would be perceived.

So what does one of the largest police departments do? They TRAIN an enemy of the state, and put people like you and me on no-fly lists.
To the FBI ( I hope you read this ) I want you to go fuck yourselves and realizes you are now the enemy of the American people. You have become the SS Storm Troopers.

I knew they had to be a government connected operation.
There is no way in hell the FBI accidentally trained these religious kooks.
So let's recap on all of the shennanigans that the FBI has been involved with:
The FBI has trained Hal Turner, a fake neo-nazi and white supremacist, to make an internet broadcast and to try and get people to e-mail him after making threats against Jews, minorities, and politicians like Cynthia McKinney.
The FBI has organized fake terror in order to keep the fake war on terror TSA bullshit going by working with Muslim extremists whom they trained to take part in terror drills and then arrested them for terrorism.
The FBI trained an Egyptian explosive expert to build a fake bomb for a terror drill on the WTC, and then at the last minute, told him to build a real bomb which ultimately killed six and injuring thousands.
The FBI worked with more neo-nazis when they helped organize a neo-nazi rally in Orlando.
The FBI had an undercover FBI agent who was a member of the Hutaree militia. The FBI then arrested the members of Hutaree were then arrested on conspiracy charges.
So who are the terrorists?

No surprise, the roots of McCarthyism from the 1950s' and 60s' are still present - I have had personal harassment experiences from the DEA and a bunch of state and local "personnel" who used us for SWAT training in 1993 under the premise of "Gay." Hatred: a social scission growing within.

At first I was floored by the headline... It sounded like the WBC was GETTING training FROM the FBI. I thought wtf!? But reading the full article at the link, it seems a LOT different... sort of like the FBI tricked the WBC into training them to know how the WBC idiots think, and how to negotiate with/investigate them and similar groups. Knowing what the FBI has done to the civil rights movement, environmental, anti-war and other non-violent groups it is almost enough to make me feel bad for the WBC... ALMOST... but not really.

WHY?
"...The bureau underestimated how the involvement of the outside organization would be perceived." - Anonymous FBI official.
Really? Are the people who make decisions in the FBI that fucking stupid?; Or was that simple, shameless bias? Either way, whoever extended the invitation to W.B. Church should go to the back of the unemployment line.

OK, I am starting the Liberals Against Foolish Fundies group to protest outside of Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, KA every time they have people show up for worship. I feel it is my right to let them know that their god is ashamed of them for allowing Phelps to preach hate and cause so much pain to grieving families.
And I expect the FBI to train me and any other LAFF members on how to best use high powered weapons. Should the FBI not allow us to join such training, for LAFFs I will endeavour to find some lawyers who will work pro bono to sue their RW enabling asses.
Seriously, it is frightening that some managers at some level of the FBI think it is OK to train civilians who belong to a hate group that does such heinous things to grieving families of US servicemen and women.
It is also frightening that a similar RW/fundy xian mindset is alive, well, and had been allowed to pressure/threaten others on the campus of the US Air Force Academy. Just how easy would it be for some religiously intolerant AF officers to start their own little crusade/jihad from, oh say 48,000 feet, and leave the rest of us to deal with the blowback?

You say:
" the bureau underestimated how the involvement of the outside organization would be perceived."So, they underestimated how the public might perceive the government training domestic terrorists how to use weapons.
How DID they estimate how the public might perceive the government training domestic terrorists how to use weapons?
I'm guessing they hoped we would not find out at all.

Divide and concur is the oldest military tactic in the book because it works.
If we truly want to help remedy the situation, we shouldn't attack our ideological enemies. Seek to understand where they are coming from and engage in thoughtful discussion. It is unlikely that everyone will agree on every subject (or any subject in some cases), but that doesn't change the fact that we all have to live together somehow.

Thank you for the post. I felt the need to dig further on the story and go to the source,NPR. http://www.npr.org/2011/06/29/137454497/fbi-invited-controversial-church-to-talk...
When I first looked at the post (with image) I erroneously assumed that the FBI was giving the Westboro group arms training. Not so. Apparently the FBI was attempting to train agents and police on how to hand the likes of the Westboro crazies.
As much as I have disdain for hate groups from any faction, I feel the need to be careful and not become a hater like them. - 11 months ago

I am not suprised that the FBI would train any of the "Fringe Groups" in any kind of way. In my opinion Westboro Baptist is the perfect "smoke screen" for the rest of the sudo-religious-political-regieme. How many automaticaly think of Westboro Baptist when we think of religious nuts. While we are thinking of them the elected religious nuts are destroying the country. The sad part is that big corporation and fundamentalist christianity are hand and glove.

Otherwise, we wouldn't of known about this. This should be major news but of course it isn't. Now the FBI spreads hate and intolerance as well. What a messed up country we live in.

I don't think this was entirely a bad idea. It's the FBI's job to know when a religious wackjob cult is just a harmless cult, and when they are a nascent terrorist organization plotting attacks on the nation.
What group of religious crazies is currently the best known wackos in the nation? The Westboro idiots.
So getting those idiots to voluntarily talk to a bunch of FBI officers to give the officers exposure to crazy people sounds like a pretty good idea to me. For once the Westboro idiots were actually doing something useful for society, even if they were somewhat tricked into doing so.

Shame. Shame. Shame.
Most of the country is against this hate group but the FBI isn't? Not only is the FBI not against it but, they actively encouraged this group to train with them?
The FBI can ferret out at least one hatemonger from the FBI by firing the person who thought training this hate group was a good idea.

The problem with this whole situation is that our FBI, our communities, our government do not want to admit we have a serious home grown terror problem. Partly because America, in general has deep seated prejudices to justify turning the blind eye to groups that target Gays, Abortion providers, mosques. If these people were brown when they walked into the FBI training facility......yktr..
