GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas — Six people were killed and four wounded when a man pulled out a gun during a boy's birthday party at a Grand Prairie skating rink and opened fire, police say.

The shooting took place Saturday evening at the Forum Roller World on Great Southwest Parkway.

Grand Prairie police chief Steve Dye said investigators believe it started as a family argument that quickly escalated.

The gunman was among those killed. He died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

The father of two children who attended the party said the shooter was the father of the boy celebrating his 11th birthday.

"He was a friendly guy," said Sen Nguyen. "I don't believe it happened like this. He was a family man."

Nguyen said the gunman's wife and other family members were among those shot.

The party started at 5:30 p.m. and was set to end at 7:30 p.m., he said. The shooting was reported shortly after 7 p.m., police said.

Nguyen said his 12-year-old daughter called him soon after the shooting.

"She got scared," he said. "She was crying. It's terrible. We just pray for the victims."

The condition, identities and ages of the survivors were not immediately known, but police said the victims were all adults and no children were injured.

The rink was closed for the private birthday party and not open to the public at the time of the shootings, police said.

Grand Prairie is about 15 miles west of downtown Dallas.

    • When I was at the grocery store today, I heard gun shots coming from the other side of the street. It seemed like it was coming from the neighborhood behind all the businesses. I've been around enough guns to know when I hear one going off. A couple and another woman in the parking lot turned their attention to the direction of the sounds with alertness, just as I did. It started with three consecutive shots. It was a long five seconds before there was another two shots. Then, right before I calmly got in my car, a mere ten seconds later, there was one last shot. I felt sure that this was not a case of someone just firing a few rounds for the hell of it. There isn't even a shooting range for twenty miles from that spot. The area it was coming from is known for violence. Heck, they even have a probation facility on the adjacent main road. Now, while I did say that I've been around guns to know when I hear one, its been awhile since I've heard it and couldn't determine what was actually happening. The world is filled with people that have some crazy fears. One my biggest fears is to be killed by a stray bullet. No one knows you were hit, at least not immediately. You have no idea what is happening, let alone how or why. On top of all that, it was not meant to kill you, so you're dying because of someone else's mistake; for nothing. But I dont panic in the face of fear. It can be strange sometimes. It takes a lot of pressure to get me to be emotional. The last time I was actually mad enough to yell at people was in March 2010. Maintaining social & physical relationships, diet and exercising are great ways to maintain healthy stress levels ;) That's enough about me. I'm out!
