Tripoli, Libya (CNN) -- Moammar Gadhafi told his people he lived modestly during his nearly 42-year rule over Libya, often sleeping in a Bedouin tent.

Even if that was true for the leader, it certainly wasn't for his sons.

At a seaside compound in western Tripoli, the Gadhafi boys enjoyed a decadent lifestyle that his people could only dream about, while perpetrating unspeakable horrors on the staff that served their every whim.

CNN visited the seaside homes Sunday.

The first house we entered was apparently the "party" beach condo with an oversized door that led into sleek, modern, black-and-white rooms. It had been ransacked by the rebels, but still it was spectacular, with panoramic ocean views and plenty of evidence of the hedonism for which Hannibal Gadhafi -- one of Moammar Gadhafi's sons -- is famous.

Discarded bottles of Johnny Walker Blue Label Scotch and Laurent Perrier pink champagne cases littered the floor. Much of the electronic equipment had been plundered, but instruction manuals remained for high end Harman/Kardon stereo components. Cabinets designed to hold two huge TV screens could still be seen.

The bedroom held a circular bed, while the in-suite bathroom was complete with sunken Jacuzzi tub lined with plastic white flowers. Outside, a hot tub, a bar and a barbecue area adjoined the private beach.

Another villa contained a white baby grand piano and more expensive stereo equipment. Next door was a huge swimming pool and diving complex, a gym, a steam room and a sauna faced in white marble. In other house.

We came upon rebels furtively dividing up a huge stash of alcohol. They seemed edgy and tense -- this is the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, and alcohol was supposedly banned under the Gadhafi regime.

We filmed them quixotically studying the labels of Cristal champagne and fine St. Emilion Bordeaux, apparently not realizing each bottle is worth hundreds of dollars.

As we were about to leave, one of the staff told us there was a nanny who worked for Hannibal Gadhafi who might speak to us. He said she'd been burnt by Hannibal's wife, Aline.

I thought he meant perhaps a cigarette stubbed out on her arm. Nothing prepared me for the moment I walked into the room to see Shwygar Mullah.

At first I thought she was wearing a hat and something over her face. Then the awful realization dawned that her entire scalp and face were covered in red wounds and scabs, a mosaic of injuries that rendered her face into a grotesque patchwork.

Even though the burns were inflicted three months ago, she was clearly still in considerable pain. But she told us her story calmly.

She'd been the nanny to Hannibal's little son and daughter.

The 30-year-old came to Libya from her native Ethiopia a year ago. At first things seemed OK, but then six months into her employment she said she was burned by Aline.

Three months later the same thing happened again, this time much more seriously.

In soft tones, she explained how Aline lost her temper when her daughter wouldn't stop crying and Mullah refused to beat the child.

"She took me to a bathroom. She tied my hands behind my back, and tied my feet. She taped my mouth, and she started pouring the boiling water on my head like this," she said, imitating the vessel of scalding hot water being poured over her head.

She peeled back the garment draped carefully over her body. Her chest, torso and legs are all mottled with scars -- some old, some still red, raw and weeping. As she spoke, clear liquid oozed from one nasty open wound on her head.

After one attack, "There were maggots coming out of my head, because she had hidden me and no one had seen me," Mullah said.

Eventually, a guard found her and took her to a hospital, where she received some treatment.

But when Aline Gadhafi found out about the kind actions of her co-worker, he was threatened with imprisonment if he dared to help her again.

"When she did all this to me, for three days, she wouldn't let me sleep," Mullah said. "I stood outside in the cold, with no food. She would say to staff, 'If anyone gives her food, I'll do the same to you.' I had no water -- nothing."

Her colleague, a man from Bangladesh who didn't want to give his name, says he was also regularly beaten and slashed with knives. He corroborated Mullah's account and says the family's dogs were treated considerably better than the staff.

Mullah was forced to watch as the dogs ate and she was left to go hungry, he said.

It seems to sum up how the workers at the beach-side complex were viewed by the Gadhafi family.

"I worked a whole year they didn't give me one penny," Mullah said. "Now I want to go to the hospital. I have no money. I have nothing."

She starts sobbing gently -- an utterly pitiful scene.

Tripoli, Libya (CNN) -- The badly burned former nanny of two of Moammar Gadhafi's grandchildren was receiving medical treatment Tuesday in the burn unit of a Tripoli hospital.

Shwygar Mullah says the wife of Gadhafi's son Hannibal poured boiling water on her for failing to keep a child quiet.

She is being treated with antibiotics for an infection. Her burns are dressed.

CNN first met Mullah on Sunday while visiting the luxurious former home of Hannibal Gadhafi.

As a CNN crew was about to leave, one of the staff members mentioned a nanny who worked for Hannibal Gadhafi. He said that Hannibal's wife, Aline, had burned the nanny.

At first it looked as though the nanny was wearing a hat and something over her face. Then the crew realized that her scalp and face were covered in red wounds and scabs, a mosaic of injuries that rendered her face into a grotesque patchwork.

Even though the burns were inflicted three months ago, she clearly was still in considerable pain, but she told her story calmly.

After one attack, "There were maggots coming out of my head, because she had hidden me and no one had seen me," Mullah said.

Photographs show Mullah's terrible condition when she first arrived at the hospital in June -- taken by doctors who started to treat her.

They say they were bullied by Hannibal Gadhafi's staff into stopping treatment.

Hospital director Rida Franka told CNN: "After three days they came and threatened me here and said you have to discharge the case or otherwise you have a lot of problems."

Despite the threats, a guard later brought the nanny back secretly for more treatment. When the Gadhafi family found out, doctors say they were again ordered to stop treatment.

And after Aline Gadhafi found out about the kind actions of Mullah's co-worker, he was threatened with imprisonment if he dared to help her again.

"When she did all this to me, for three days, she wouldn't let me sleep," Mullah said. "I stood outside in the cold, with no food. She would say to staff, 'If anyone gives her food, I'll do the same to you.' I had no water -- nothing."

Mullah was forced to watch as the dogs ate and she was left to go hungry, he said.

CNN has been inundated with offers of assistance for Mullah and is working with humanitarian organizations and medical officials to get help for her.

As soon as information is available, CNN will let people know how to help on CNN and CNN.com/impact.

I'm not buying Gaddafi himself was so evil, and have plenty of valid reasons.... Now are women treated less than human in that region often? I'm sure they are...

"When contemplating war, beware of babies in incubators"

I've got no doubt that the stories of Gaddafi's sons decadent lifestyles are true as they are fairly well documented, but the boiling water atrocity story - not so sure.

Sounds a bit like "babies being thrown from incubators," "mass graves of Kosovo" and "Gaddafi supplying his troops with viagra" so they can rape women nonsense.

Also, it was the wife of Gaddafi's son who allegedly burned this woman, not Gaddafi's son for those of you who are commenting on the treatment of women in Libya.

A few days ago, in Orange County (California), a mother threw her little baby off the side of a multi-storied parking structure attached to that county's children's hospital. Wonder if you can find a way to make this news unbelievable. By the way, the baby boy died.

The treatment of many women -- by many MEN -- in many of these countries is atrocious. As for this "alleged" incident, yes, it was a WOMAN who "allegedly" burned another woman... and I think THAT'S equally atrocious.

I think you're missing my point.

I'm not denying that atrocities don't exist in the world, but we're not at war with Orange County California. We are at war with Libya though, and nothing rallies support from us 'Mercins like a horrible story against a women. child or otherwise defenseless minority class.

And tbh, there have just been too many false or otherwise questionable stories like this coming out just in time for war.

Also, I'm not denying that men mistreat women in Islamic nations. I just think that it's no more widespread than what we call "spousal abuse" here in the US. I was just pointing out that many were commenting as if Gaddafi's son had burned this woman and nowhere in the article does it state this, although it certainly attempts to imply it though.

    • Another victim of another regime supported by the US government when it suited their purposes. Rumsfeld shook Hussein's hand, and Obama shook Gadafi's. But of course, these dictators are always "good" regardless of their crimes and abuses when they play ball with us and are only "evil" when they fall. And the American MSM is no better now using this woman just to get shock value and ratings when they otherwise would not have given a damn. Hopefully, CNN took her out of there and is getting her medical treatment. Right? Or was getting the picture their only goal? Amazing how the "corporate" media is also suddenly reliable to those for whom it suits a purpose as well. The same corporate media that sits while famine goes on killing thousands, and lies to us daily by omission about global events (climate change as one) affecting our lives because it isn't lucrative enough for them to tell the truth. I don't know the ultimate goal of this. Is it to persuade us that Gadafi is a monster? Already known. Is it to somehow try to turn people who believe this intervention was illegal? Common guilt tactic which assumes a lot. Actually, I'm tired of having to feel guilty for questioning what I see or the motivations behind our involvement in a war. Bring Gadafi to justice then instead of now playing tthese mind games. I mean the sooner we do that the sooner our government can move onto the next conquest no? And I'm sure we will see the follow up story to this about how CNN got this woman out and got her the treatment she needed.

    • If most of you don't know , a lot of Arab women are still treated like this and worse. They are still looking for an arab man who killed both of his teenage daughters because they were becoming too Western. Surely CNN wouldn't doctor pictures like this. I once saw a woman whose nose had been cut off because her husband was dissatisfied about something. Unfortunately some of these horror stories are true.

    • There is no disputing the woman has been badly burnt (though has way nicer accommodations than myself), and that if intentional, the people who did it are monsters....

I just have a hard time trusting CNN, the government, my shadow....

And it might have been a little over a year ago but the U.S. and international community was talking like they were lightening up on Gaddafi, like maybe he wasn't so bad.

It would just be easy to see how the U.S. saw a way to seize to resources, without paying for them or not paying fair market value for them, or maybe it was resources the current/old Libyan government didn't want to sell... That and I'll never trust the media, and 99.99999% of politicians out there ever again, there is no fixing it...

So every time CNN or a politician says something, I instinctively think it's a lie, and start looking for the truth...

And yes I really believe that CNN, and the politicians are that bad..... How you can be on T.V. everyday knowing your government is torturing people and not speak out about it, or the other atrocities our government has committed... Oh wait the politicians are in the media's back pocket, as well as in the pockets of big name war profiteers... And there probably is dirty dealings between media corporations and oh-let's say Lockheed Martin, so well... Yeah if they bring down their puppets, maybe and anti-corruption politician gets elected, Wolf Blitzer won't be invited to White House parties anymore...

Not saying it's fake, just saying I don't know what to believe one way or the other....

Sad statement, but an honest one....

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one to think all this stuff 'coming out' is perhaps hogwash, or at least, framed in the 'correct' light. Almost everyone the US goes after turns out to have done 'terrible deeds' and everyone is grateful we wrongfully bombed thousands of people, as if finding horrors justify our own...

The first sign the media is lying is when the majority agrees with it... Just because it's pointing something 'favorable' toward someone's agenda, doesn't make it true, or right.

That's a childish response. There's a reason to follow all news even if it's phoney. We didn't say anyone was foolish, simply stating that the lies continue even after a conflict to sway public opinion... The winner always writes history.
