By Chris Hedges
We have begun the election march of the trolls. They have crawled out of the sewers of public relations firms, polling organizations, the commercial media, the two corporate political parties and elected office to fill the airwaves with inanities and absurdities until the final inanity—the 2012 presidential election. Journalists, whose role has been reduced to purveyors of court gossip, whether on Fox or MSNBC, descend in swarms to report pseudo-events such as the Ames straw poll, where it costs $30 to cast a ballot. And then, almost immediately, they blithely inform us that the Iowa poll is meaningless now that Rick Perry has entered the race. The liberal trolls, as they do in every election cycle, are beating their little chests about the perfidiousness of the Democratic Party and Barack Obama. It is a gesture performed not to effect change but to burnish their credentials as moralists. They know, as do we, that they will trot obediently into the voting booth in 2012 to do as they are told. And everywhere the pulse of the nation is being assiduously monitored through polls and focus groups, not because our opinions matter, but because our troll candidates understand that by parroting back to us our own viewpoints they can continue to spend their days lapping up corporate money with other trolls in the two houses of Congress, the White House, the Supreme Court and television studios where they chat with troll celebrity journalists.
The only commodity the troll state offers is fear. The corporate trolls, such as the Koch brothers, terrify the birthers, creationists, militia lovers, tea party militants, right-to-life advocates, Christian fascists and God-fearing red-white-and-blue patriots by proclaiming that unless they vote for Perry or Mitt Romney or Michele Bachmann or some other product of the lunatic fringe of our political establishment, the American family will be destroyed, our children will be corrupted and the country will turn socialist. Barack Obama, who they whisper is a closet Muslim, will take away their guns, raise their taxes and bring homosexual couples into kindergartens.
For those, usually liberals, still rooted in a reality-based world, one that believes in evolutionary science, the corporate trolls offer a more refined, fear-based message of impending doom: If you abandon the Democrats we will be governed by Bible-thumping idiots who will make us chant the Pledge of Allegiance in mass rallies and teach the account of Genesis as historical and biological fact in our nation’s schools.
And underneath it all runs the mantra chanted in unison by all the trolls—terror, terror, terror. The troll establishment spins us like windup dolls and laughs all the way to the bank. What idiots, they think. And every election cycle we prove them right.
“The only people who grasp the distinction between reality and appearance, who grasp the laws of conduct and society, are the ruling groups and those who do their bidding; scientific, technical elites who elucidate the laws of behavior and the functions of society so that people might be more effectively, albeit unconsciously, governed,” wrote James W. Carey in “Communication as Culture.”
The trolls dominate or have neutralized every major institution in the country on behalf of their corporate paymasters. The press, education, Wall Street, labor and our political parties are managed by trolls or have been destroyed by them. Sometimes these trolls speak like liberals. Sometimes they speak like conservatives. Sometimes they are secular. Sometimes they are Christians. But the language they use is a cover for the relentless march toward a totalitarian capitalism and a kingdom where the trolls, if not the rest of us, live happily ever after. Rick Perry and John Boehner overtly make war on Social Security. Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi say they would like to save Social Security but are sadly powerless before the decisions of a congressional super committee they helped form. The result, of course, is the same. We get to choose the rhetoric and manner in which we are deceived and disempowered. Nothing more. (more at link )

This guy was a war correspondent who can't be carried by the MSM anymore because he speaks the truth. I started hearing him on the ROF radio show over a year ago. I was blown away. I knew something was definitely not happening with the Obama administration and the WH hype was just not cutting it. The Dem cheerleaders were just a bit too cloying at a time when Rahm was bashing us for being the cultural left, or the professional left for expecting something in the ballpark of the change we voted for. I smelled a rat. Got no relief from MSNBC.
First I went through denial it could be so totally f**ked-up, an actual dog & pony show - pure political theater for the masses, then anger when I realized we had been totally duped, what goes on in Washington is a charade. Since then slowly but surely I see people waking up to that reality as hard to swallow as it is.
It's far too late for the politics of image, we must rise up and demand politics of action about the issue that will take us all down - the global corporate coup. And I see no better way to start than in Oct. 6th with Chris in Washington.

Maybe we do need a facist government lead by Bachman or Perry. As much as I despise what they stand for, maybe US voters will wake up from the corporate propaganda dream that keep electing these bastards. If this were to happen, maybe, the political pendulum will swing hard to the left and elect a real progressive government. Right now we are fighting an ever losing battle because there are too many voters who are brainwashed by religion and corporate propaganda. Here in the state of Florida, both Perry and Bachman are ahead of Obama in the polls. Even if Obama wins, he and the blue dog democrats will continue to apease conservatives and religious groups. I say let them have what they want, they will be clamoring for an FDR like president and Congress. Only then we will be able to break the political stealmate and have a REAL progressive government.

Chris Hedges does humanity no favor when he blames world problems on secularism. Though I agree with some of what he says, he still gets a thumbs down for actually having the gall to feel that one man, in one place at one time, could actually be a deity!

A troll for whom? People who want to see past the sham of politics? Past the sham of scapegoating a religion for blowback against the US policy of asset rape, plunder and genocide for the oil empire? So be it...
I've read Hedge's work and saw the debates that so infuriated atheists and I don't understand what the beef is with Hedge's position that extreme fundamentalist religion is currently being used today in the mideast and here at home to foster those ends by totalitarian regimes, from dictators abroad to a form of Rule of Law Democracy in the USA which is a corporate dictatorship.
What's more unrealistic to believe - that you'll see all the world's problems vanish with the abolition of the world's religions, or that the majority of the world's problems can be solved by a ending a policy of plunder that impoverishes people of any belief? Perhaps they are both equally unrealistic, but I find it morally reprehensible as well as plain idiotic to claim that because a nation or tribe has a backward religion, we should fear them and take measures to protect ourselves against them, while we blame their religion for blowback and condone seizing their wealth. The disconnect is astonishing.
And the other thing that truly bothers me is that the guy found empathy for those being killed as collateral damage a thousand fold to military casualties, as well as for those who became a jihadist or suicide bomber, by being there on the ground in the horror of unjust wars - and his experience is dismissed with contempt. F**k that kind of parlor intellectualism, we are all connected as human beings, it's about time we faced the reality that we cause more death and destruction on the planet than any other country for the sake of profits - not prophets, period. I think Hedges is right when he says people turn to radical fundamentalism when all hope is lost.
The problem the world faces is not whether or not there is a God or if what you personally choose to believe in is more or less valid than another's belief, even though I do agree with my Native American friends who say the scariest word in the english language is "I believe". The God the plutocracy worships is greed. And that belief will crush us all regardless of where we stand on the issue of religion. And finally in case you think I'm a follower of the big 3, I'm not, I think live and let live is where it's at, as does most of the world if you can get past their religiousosity or rejection of it.

@Fishinflick....
Religion is consistently at the root of evil in the world. It encourages people to be sheep, encourages monarchy, encourages inequality amongst people. Although not realized in his time, Thomas Jefferson had it right when he put forth the notion that all men are equal. Taken to it's logical conclusion, all humans are equal and free. One of the biggest lies perpetrated by Hedges is to give credence to the notion that atheism is a belief system. Any atheist who claims to not believe in god is not as well studied as they may think. It's not that atheist do not believe, it's that the have zero belief. Their argument is that not believing is a belief in the same way not choosing is a choice. Well, I guess that works for a third grade logician; however any atheist worth his salt will tell you zero belief is not a belief in that it is the negative of belief. It's precisely zero belief. One other point is that some people are extreme by nature and beliefs. You can claim any belief and support that with extemism. When it comes to atheists who claim "no" belief you can find the same. The problem is that a troll like Hedges consistently misrepresent people like Dawkins, Harris, and Hitchens by putting them into this category. For gods sake and lack of a better exclamation, Dawkins said there is a vanishingly small chance there could be some kind of deity and gave it the same probability as a wind blowing through a junkyard and assembling a 747 Jet. With respect to Harris, Hedges clearly misrepresents his work. He construes the writing to say things they do not. I suggest you read the Harris response to this. As usual Harris is spot on and Hedges is playing the troll. Look, we all know the the wealthy have taken back the power to rule the masses, as the royalty of kings once ruled the peasents. Hedges is spot on when he points to this and the corporate structure they used to perform this coup. Beyond this, I find little common ground with any man who has the gaul to deify any other man. After all, "All men are created equal" is more powerful, if not as powerfull a notion, than the best quote of Jesus you can pull out of Thomas Jefferson's own version of the bible!

I think that there's a tribalistic response ingrained in our species for territory and power, that is still at play in a much more sophisticated way than can be simply pinned on religion as being at the root of all evil. I'm talking about the tribal culture that sprang up when we settled down and claimed land, rather than roaming across land as hunter-gatherers. I think that early belief systems sprang up to explain the unexplainable nature of the universe is a part of where religion came from. But I also reckon it was part of man's evolution toward a "civilized" culture making laws to impose order on a society confined in close quarters for the long haul. So I see it all through the lens of an evolving civilization, the same force that has given rise to science. Given the maturity of mankind as a species both technology and religion can be and are used in the most barbaric ways imaginable, and I still posit that greed is at the root of this evil.
I think we may have lost something vital with our connection to nature with the religions that sprung up out of the Mideast. Personally I'm fascinated more with really ancient belief systems that venerated nature. Actually I'm inclined to believe we may have lost our way a bit - our place in the eco-system when we abandoned the hunter-gatherer lifestyle for an agrarian one. But how could it have been otherwise with the human population exploding across the globe? I won't defend the big 3 here. And I won't put down atheism. As I see it it is all part of our evolution but the root cause of evil is within every one of us and it's a choice we make as individuals.
I acknowledge that like any ideology religion can be and was used for evil purposes. That said the church played a vital role in the civil rights movement, and that's a fact. Making the point it could have happened sooner without religion is a moot point. We are all simply where were at, and it's not a good place. If you think that people will cease to seek a spiritual path anytime soon you're being a tad unrealistic. I am equally concerned science is being abandoned for lunatic fringe religious fundamentalism.
My issue with Harris and I have read and reread his rebuttals is that he indeed does consider sanctions against Muslims in a conveniently passing way with an attached moral disclaimer. But he puts it out there and Hedges calls him out on it. Harris is a war hawk from what I can tell objectively and on my own.
Finally I would like to say that the world we live in calls for extreme tolerance and empathy if we are to unite and face the common foe. I would have no problem with joining forces with Hedges or Harris or someone who believed in a deity shaped like a frosty freeze cone if they were willing to fight the beast. And that includes you my friend! Peace!

Last points on this dead horse are:Religion is at the heart of every tribal civilization. That is why they are myths and legends.
You too would have been a war hawk if you lived during certain parts of world war 2. Harris is right to point out the danger, not just from the extremists, who we all know are sociopathic nuts, but those in the middle who make it safe for these people to get away with what they get away with. I daresay those in the middle are potentially more dangerous.
Lastly, stay strong, ultimately you are right that we are in this together. I will stand next to Hedges if he's marching against corporate greed; however, I'll be the first one to call him out on his ridiculous interpretation of christianity, and sore misjudgement of atheism!

We can certainly agree to disagree. The dead horse will soon be civilization as we know it...
In many "primitive" societies the so called myths and legends contain their oral history, their migrations, etc. To form a value judgement about tribal society is biased, arrogant and evil. The ideological concept of Manifest Destiny allowed for the slaughtering of tribes because they were deemed unworthy, a secular idea as evil as the religious concept of slaughtering tribes for being heathens.
I am older than Harris, and I will never be a war hawk. And I do agree that those in the middle are dangerous. They are at their most dangerous when they cave into the constant fear machine that propels war, and do nothing to stop the march of the corporate coup.
I acknowledge that you feel slighted by Hedges. Both Harris and Hedges take positions that provoke intense feelings of anger and resentment, and they did it intentionally to start a debate, which they engaged in, and sold a lot of books in the process… I am neither challenged nor threatened by either position and see a lot to be desired in both. I am opposed to dogma both secular and religious that as you initially put it - does no service to humanity. Neither science nor religion will save humanity from itself as long as they can be used to continue blowing ourselves to bits.

We can't seem to communicate on any level. I'm truly sorry about that. I have never predicted or relished the idea of the end of the world. I only acknowledge that the potential for us to destroy ourselves and much of life on earth is there from what I can plainly see: from the destruction of the environment and a system that has adopted an endless war agenda to a growing intolerance that devalues and demonizes entire segments of human societies for reasons of race, religion, sexuality or ideology. And since you don't know me and I don't know you I will take you calling me a some kind of dominion fool with a grain of salt. I'm sure that we share more values, including the willingness to fight the corporate coup - the point of the above Hedges post - than we actually may or may not disagree on.

C. M. Kornbluth wrote a novel named, The Marching Morons, which is one of my favorite societal science fiction reads.
The title "Marching Morons" appears to be derived from a theory of population growth referred to as "The Marching Chinamen" or "The Marching Chinese." The theory holds that if the entire population of China were to line up and file through a gate, they would never finish, as China's population is large enough that the children of those currently passing through the gate will mature and have more children, who themselves have time to mature and have yet more children, ad infinitum. An illustration of the concept was the "The Marching Chinese" cartoon published in the Ripley's Believe or Not Comic strip, which claimed that if the Chinese population were to "march - 4 abreast - past a given point they would never finish passing though they marched forever and ever." The cartoon makes the claim that the calculation was "based on U.S. Army marching regulations. - Wikipedia
The storyline could be construed to represent today's political scene by the fact that there are so many people who follow a particular Party in lockstep over a cliff to their own eventual doom.

"October 2011 is the 10th anniversary of the invasion of Afghanistan and the beginning of the 2012 federal austerity budget. It is time to light the spark that sets off a true democratic, nonviolent transition to a world in which people are freed to create just and sustainable solutions.
I pledge that if any U.S. troops, contractors, or mercenaries remain in Afghanistan on Thursday, October 6, 2011, as that occupation goes into its 11th year, I will commit to being in Freedom Plaza in Washington, D.C., with others on that day or the days immediately following, for as long as I can, with the intention of making it our Tahrir Square, Cairo, our Madison, Wisconsin, where we will NONVIOLENTLY resist the corporate machine by occupying Freedom Plaza to demand that America's resources be invested in human needs and environmental protection instead of war and
exploitation. We can do this together. We will be the beginning."
We call on people of conscience and courage—all who seek peace, economic justice, human rights and a healthy environment—to join together in Washington, D.C., beginning on Oct. 6, 2011, in nonviolent resistance similar to the Arab Spring and the Midwest awakening. Not so sure I am marching into the polling place to voter for Obama. I have lost all vestiges of hope that the election process is in our hands. TPTB will put in the leading man/woman of their choosing and it matters not what I want.
But I will rant, point out when emperors are strutting buck nekkid and when there is a failure of logic. Mostly, it's habit by now. I know some listen and sometimes it gets a few thinking, but we are already down the road to third world status like I warned they were taking us decades ago.

Fuck the trolls. Maybe Nader will run again. I voted for him in 2000, and I'll vote for someone like him in 2012.

The political parties are trolls. Many years ago I enjoyed watching the Sunday morning talkies. Now each party huddles, calls the play, breaks the huddle and goes on every show repeating the exact same mantra of the week their party wants to spread. There isn't a lick of debate and insightfulness on these shows anymore. If the question doesn't fit the strategy of the politician, he/she goes off on a tangent of what the party wants said and ignores the question.
